upgrade to convertible car seat?

I'm debating on whether or not to go ahead and purchase a convertible car seat for DS before a long road trip coming up or if we should continue using our Chicco carrier. DS still fits in the Chicco with no problem, but my concern is that he always seems hot when I take him out. I'm assuming that convertible car seats allow for more airflow. I'd just hate for DS to be miserable during our trip.

Thoughts?
