As for kids making fun - if she's someone the mean kids want to make fun of, they'll find something. Name, freckles, the fact that she doodles, hair color, eye color...kids are mean. Don't let potential mean kids deter you from a name you really like.

Astrid turns into Ass Turd really quickly in a kid's mind- just an FYI, if it hadn't occurred to you guys.
Samantha and Sara are both beautiful, though.
It had, but while we wade through 1001 baby names and yell at each other about how dumb the other's pick is (because a healthy marriage is based on meaningful communication, you know) we're just trying to agree on any of them.
Plus, a little bit of character building middleschool schenanigans doesn't kill anyone.
Do you watch The Office? This woman named her baby Astrid and Michael kept calling her "Assturd" on accident. I'll forever make that association. I'd stick with Sara or Samantha.

Okay, as a teacher, I have to agree that kids will make fun of anything, but you might as well not make it easier. You can't guarantee that your kid won't have freckles, but you can guarantee that your child isn't named an "easy-target" name like Gaylord or something very similar to Assturd. No reason to give them more to make fun of. It's a shame, too, since I love Astrid.

I know some people don't like it, but I really like Astrid! It reminds me of a Vanderbilt or Rockefeller or someone like that - elegant, classic, old-fashioned but not dowdy.
I think it flows well into mn's as well: Astrid Joan Virginia...

Both hubby and I feel that a certain amount of mockery and playground/middle school misbehavior is inevitable and long-term beneficial. As well, we're both very smart and bookish, wear glasses and have the 'social awkwards' so the mockery is a bit inevitable anyway. We're more interested in giving a name that isn't cookie cutter and which has meaning. Not that it doesn't suck for the kid, but... it's not a worry for us mostly because a million kids survive it.

I like Samantha and Sara best. Sara is my favorite. I agree with the others about teasing being very likely with the name Astrid. In working with kids under the age of 16, anything that starts with the sound "as" gets snickers in the classroom.
I understand what you mean about some teasing being inevitable and maybe even beneficial, but why set your child up for teasing from the get-go? Every kid goes through awkward years and gets teased. I just see choosing a very different name that kids make fun of as additional teasing on top of that.
to be honest, i love the name sara, but my name is sarah...which is wonderful, but throughout my whole life everything I have done there is always 1-3 other sara or sarah's in school, at work, on a sports team, out to dinner.. it gets annoying. I am 25 and you would think that the name sara isn't as popular anymore, but over the last 8 years it still remains in the top 15 baby names for girls. Although I love my name at work I go by a nickname because I have always worked with at least one sara anywhere I have been. Since I have a very popular name I am personally taking it in consideration while I have been picking out names for my little one.
I love Samantha and Sara. Samantha was our second choice name. Sara is high on our list if we ever have another girl. Astrid reminds me of the book White Oleander--not a happy connotation.
I like samantha the most. Astrid is awful in my opinion.

Re: Girl names
Sarah is my top pick
Samantha is pretty too, but with the double middle names it's just too long
I like Astrid. Yay Pippi!

Middle names are for when the kid is in trouble, official documents, and high occasions. Most of the time, it'll be just the first or a nickname.
I love Samantha
I like Sara
I do not like Astrid at all. I agree with the pp who said it can easily be turned to ass turd.

This is hilarious. I never would have thought of that. I do love Samantha. That is my fav.
Ditto.
Samantha and Sara are pretty. I can't get past the ass in astrid and I don't think many kids will be able to either.
Both sound great with the mns. I like Sara best.
I like Samantha best, but I think Sara would go better with the 2 middle names since its shorter and Virginia is pretty long.
Astrid is ok, but nms.
