rocking chair for a shower gift...

Hey ladies,

I need some advice! My good friend just stopped over w/ my shower gift (shower is tomorrow) and I just don't know what to do with it. She gave me her old wooden rocking chair, which is so nice because we don't have a rocker for the baby's room, but have a nice glider in the living room. Problem is we live in a tiny little rental house where the baby's room doubles as my Pampered Chef office and our living room is about 40 feet from the baby's room. I think the chair is such a nice gift but I have NO room for it in my house and don't have a clue what to do with it. DH suggested putting it in the basement for now but I would feel horrible if she came over and obviously she didn't see it, it's not like there is anywhere to hide it. So what do you do? Do you just shove it in the room and pray that it somehow fits and you use it or do you store if until you have more room or what!?! I am just so confused...and I'm kind of in shock that someone would give an old rocking chair as a gift w/ out asking the person if they needed/wanted one. I find it very touching that she gave it to me but serioulsy I'm just confused...any help would be appreciated!

is the basement an ok area or is it kinda gross/scary? if it isnt a horrible space I would prob put it in the basement and if she came over and asked about it say its down there for now until you can move some stuff around to make room for it..(or if you plan on moving soon, say waiting to "christen" it until you can put it in the babys new room-that way it makes it sound special) Either way, I wouldnt compromise our living space, esp when you have so little of it, just to spare her feelings--when you have the space for it youll use it...

well...in my opinion it is really unacceptable to give a hand me down rocking chair as a shower gift (unless she knew you were dying for a vintage/used rocking chair)...

so i see no reason why if you have no room why you need to keep this. ?it is just weird that she would give you this....this is honestly why i never buy anything that is not on the registry!!!?

YES! i dont understand why people dont get this!!! its there for a reason and we did months of research for a reason!! things you get for baby are such personal choices....it baffles me

Yeah I most definitly was not in the market for a rocking chair of any kind...specially a hand me down...the basement is basically storage and laundry and is at least dry so I think it's headed down there for now...I'm nervous for my shower tomorow....the walmart gift registry computer is down and now I'm more afraid of the random items I'm going to end up getting...oh boy!

i wouldnt feel bad storing it somewhere- not at all...

if there is no room, there is no room- she didnt ask you if you had the space...that's not a little gift, it's furniture and to me, ppl should ask you if you need it- not assume when its that big...jmo

after my shower, my advice will always be, pray for gift receipts bc people get you whatever the hell they want..If she acts offended once she knows its in the basement say its totally helpful when you and LO are doing laundry.

update: Just broke down in tears over the stupid chair...my husband (he's a bigger guy) CAN'T even sit in the chair! It's too small! So now I'm thinking why on earth would we put a chair in a room when we have no room if we both can't even use it?!!? Seriously...I feel like I've just been thrust into a very akward social situation that I don't know how to handle and I'm already a hormonal mess anyway...
