I had a planned C-section so my birth story is pretty routine. We were scheduled for a 7:15 surgery time on May 15 and we got to the hospital at 5am. I had my IV and epidural by 6:45 and she was born at 7:35am. Claire Elizabeth was 20 ? inches long and weighed 7 lbs 13 ounces and had a head full of dark hair.
Now for the parts that caught me off guard? First, the epidural is not just a single sensation like a normal shot. There were several sensations. One felt like a bolt of lightening going through my body and others felt like tingling or numbness running through my body at different times. I really thought it was a quick process but I was surprised by how long I felt strange sensations. I then got the shakes horribly and my blood pressure was fluctuating greatly. I could feel when it would get low- I felt like I would throw up and get light headed and they would inject me with something and then I could feel it sky rocket. In fact, my DH was only in the ER for a few seconds before Claire was born because they were working so hard to stabilize me. Another thing that surprised me was that you could feel touch but not pain. I had a hard time believing I could feel their hands but not a scalpel but it was true. I remember calling it ?magic medicine? at one point.
The epidural was great for pain relief- I was walking by the end of day 1. I was doing so well that a nurse talked me into getting on Percocets and weaning off of the epi a little early because the epidural made me itch. I would NOT recommend this. On day 2 I couldn?t get out of bed which was odd since I was walking the night before. They then switched me to Lortab and I felt much better. Recovery after day 2 was not as bad as I expected. I was off of pain meds in 4 days.
Breastfeeding has been a challenge- I met with 6 different lactation consultants in the hospital but we are finally getting it. Our feeding process takes about an hour and a half because I have to feed, pump, and bottle feed but she?s latching for longer and longer periods each day.
Motherhood is great and I am loving every minute of it. Good luck to everyone- it?s so very worth everything in the end. Now for some pics?
