We had an US done at 35 weeks 1 day due to decreased fetal movement. everything was fine, biophysical profile 8/8, but the baby measured at the 21 percentile for size. 5lb 4oz
After that, my OB's kept measuring my fundal height and told me everything was fine, we're just waiting for the baby, etc. . I WAS NOT SATISFIED with this and kept hounding them for another US. Finally, last week (37 weeks 1 day) the doc ordered an US (basically to shut me up) for saturday. at 37 weeks, 5 days, the baby was in the 9 percentile for size. 5lb 7oz.
We were told go to the hospital for an NST. I said to my DH, "we might be having a baby today" and his response was, "no way, why would they lie?" Uh-huh. I work at a hospital and I'll tell you why - because they didn't want us to go home and get the bag or get in an accident speeding to the hospital. f'ing d'uh!
we get to the hospital, go to the desk in L and D, and my DH was told to go register me. as he walks away, the nurse tells me I'm admitted t for my induction. HELLO?! DH wasn't even there for me to say I told you so!!
From there, everything else goes really really well. they started me on pitocin at 1pm. I was 1-2 cm dilated and 50% effaced. at about 3pm I got my epidural because the girl in the room next door was HOWLING and since anesthesia was on call for the holiday, we fibbed, said I was in pain and needed mine. The doc seemed to get the idea, but he wasn't really complaining. I'm sure he wanted to get back to his golf and I really wasn't very uncomfortable yet. But boy howdy, is that epidural great! I was able to move my legs pretty freely and wasn't horribly numb at all.
at about 8pm, the howler had her kid, and i was still only at 3-4 cm and 90% effaced. I was PISSED.
At about 10, I was having a lot of pressure, the nurses were stalling a bit, "oh the midwife said not to check you that often" and "just keeping relaxing." that was great until about 11, when she finally saw head compression on the monitor.
Yup. 10cm, and 100% effaced at 11pm "don't push, we're waiting for the midwife." At 1130pm (yes, don't push for 30 minutes) she comes in, and we get going with pushing.
Ninety minutes, many rests, and five decent pukes later, my son was born! 5/24/09 - 110am, 5lb 12 oz, but basically healthy. They have no reason for my IUGR, since the placenta was in excellent shape. He's lost some weight and is fairly jaundiced, but both seem to be on the rebound. I feel really good. I LOVE my nurse midwife, as granola as it sounds, because she does stretching and olive oil. I have a small abrasion that stings like an SOB, but no episiotomy, no tears, no stitches...
My advice is to be your own best advocate. If you want followup, be a b*tch and get your followup! If not, who knows what may have happened with my little peanut... my best wishes and tons of good healthy baby vibes to you all!
