I *think* I made MIL mad...

DH's cousin past away 8-9 years ago (or so, I am not sure how long ago).  They are having graveside services for him tonight (the anniversary of his death) and dinner at his parents house.  I told MIL that I did not feel comfortable attending (didn't know him), much less keeping my 1 & 3 yo's quiet and calm during this w/o DH's help (he will be at work).

DH and my SIL understand and agree.  MIL was just quiet when I told her we wouldn't be there.  She did the same thing to SIL when she said her 3 yo DS who just had his tonsils out Tuesday will not attend.

Re: I *think* I made MIL mad...

  • Honestly, if you didn?t know his cousin, how can you grieve with the rest? You know they will be swapping stories about the cousin and talking about the cousin all evening. You would feel like an outcast in a large crowd of grieving people with nothing to say. That alone would make me uncomfortable.
I guess I don?t understand why your MIL would be so upset. Makes no sense to me, and I feel you did the right thing by not going.

She will get over it. I totally don't think its approrpriate for young children to be at funerals and other "events" like that. You made the right choice. I would not have gone either..........

Probably not the first, won't be the last.  She's family.  That's how it goes.
