AFP test back

Yet again my AFP (triple screen test) came back high for neural tube defects.  My midwife was confident, from the ultrasound shots yesterday, that everything is progressing fine and for some reason it's just a higher than normal ratio.  I am very happy and thankful for this.

However, when I was pg with DD this test came back high.  She wasn't born with NT defect, but was born with EB- a skin condition.  My H and I have been doing some research about the likelihood of this LO having EB as well.  There seems to be some connection.  Problem is, EB is so rare that there really isn't a lot of research on it so although this has happened for a couple of families, it's not clear if those were just flukes or if there is really something to it.

We were told that the type of EB DD had was caused by spontaneous mutation of the gene and not something we carry, but now we're second guessing this.

So, we plan to meet with the specialists who will perform the level II ultrasound and talk this through with them, along with checking for the NT defects.  We already have a list of questions going.

Though I know everything will work out the way it was supposed to, I am just nervous and anxious about this pregnancy to begin with and now I'm feeling even more stressed.  Just a bummer of a day.

Sorry its turning out so stressful!!!  I hope the level II ultrasound calms your fears!!!

I'm with you on "knowing everything will work out the way it was supposed to" but I too always get so stressed about worrying all the different ways things could turn out!  If only it could be worry free and our biggest thought was what color to paint their nursery and all.  :)   You're in my thoughts!

Bummer indeed. After all you have been through I wish I could just magic up a wonderful, carefree pregnancy for you.

Glad to hear that your midwife thinks all is well and I hope the specialists are able to dispel some of your fears, although I am sure it is hard (impossible?) not to worry.
