30 weeks and contractions...

so, i am sort of new around here. you may have seen me lurking and commenting away... well, i had a crazy sort of day and thought i would share. though, it is not as scary as the one on here who is dialated. (and why dont they have spell check on here for those of us who are brain dead by this point in their pregnancy and cant figure out how to spell anything!?!)

today i went for my first non-stress test and found out i was having contractions. i had no idea that i was having them either. i had some sort of sense that something was wrong, but i had nothing to confirm that. so, they sent me over to the hospital where they were SLAMMED with pregnant women! i lucked out and they sent me to a really nice room in labor and delivery instead of triage (where they were full). anyhow, my cervix was still closed! YAY! and i am 50% effaced, which the dr. said he wasnt concerned about this far in the pregnancy and with twins. he said they may just be pushing down a lot? then, they did some test that is to tell if i am likely to go into labor in the next 7-14 days and that came back negative. i was surprised that they just let me go home then. i thought for sure i would get a steroid for lung development and something for contractions! anyhow, it was a weird day and night, but i am sooooooo glad it is over and hope the babies stay in for another 4 weeks at least!!!

so, what is the whole deal with effacement anyhow? i asked about it twice, but i still think it doesnt totally make sense. why do they use the number if it doesnt really matter? thats what the doctor said. or did he mean it didnt matter because my cervix was shut and i am 30 weeks? all this stuff confuses me half the time...

anyhow, let us hope that me and the other girl who is 30 weeks and dialated can hold our babies in another 4 weeks at least!

Re: 30 weeks and contractions...

  • Not sure why YOUR doc said that (if it was because you're so far along), but generally it really doesn't matter.  Some people can literally walk around 70%-80% effaced, 3cm dilated for weeks and still need to be induced (so he/she could've said it for that reason too).  I think they like to have a general idea of how much progress your cervix is making, but it's nothing to freak out about.  GL.
  • I've been about 75% effaced for 5-6 weeks, and I'm still not dialated.  My Dr. hasn't been concerned.

How far apart were your contractions?  Have you had them since?
