Totaled truck - help ?s

We've never had an accident before and are a little lost in the process of how this all will work.  Hubby totaled his truck this morning - not his fault.  The other insurance company has already taken care of a rental for him.  Now, on the claims adjuster, what has been your experience with the value they give - NADA or lower than you thought?  Can you point out added items that you put in to increase the value and will they adjust accordingly - example in-dash navigation, back up camera, things we added after-market.  Or are they strict with VIN specs only and not provide any other adjustments.  DH had put about $2k into the truck recently and we are hoping we will get that back on top of the regular value.  Thanks for any help!

  •  If the after marker items are still in working condition go get them and re-use or sell.

  • My first job as a teen was working in a law office.  Holy moly those adjusters did their best to be as stingy as possible Tongue Tied   My best advice is claim everything and if you feel you are getting a petty offer than you should contact an attorney.  You don't pay any money but often times a lawyer writes the adjuster a demand letter and they counter until a reasonable settlement is made.

  •  I can tell you when I totaled my car and someone else's, it was my fault. The guy I hit had just put a new transmission in his truck and an engine and my insurance didn't pay for that.

    Good luck!

  • My car was totaled in an accident a few years ago.  I remember I claimed all of the extras I had added - cd player, remote starter, etc. - but they didn't give me anything for those items.  I'd still mention all the after-market things you purchased for the vehicle as you never know what they'll reimburse, it can't hurt.

They also offered me a low reimbursement price.  I had checked Kelly Blue Book and a few other sites that DH looked up and came back to them with what the value of my car would be if I were to sell it as it was higher than what they were offering.  They ended up giving me a little bit more back so it was worth the bit of research.

  • I did this last month, totaled DH's baby.  You may have more than one adjuster and your husband should just hang out when the adjuster shows up so that they are aware of all the upgrades you had done to the truck.  DH just hung out when the adjuster showed.  They may have more than one adjuster come and check things out.  I am sorry that you are going through this.  We got about what the car was worth, not much more and since then DH has been shopping for his next project car.  Oh, and DH has been stripping what was still in good shape on his car and selling it to others that like his make and model, he gutted the stereo since he didn't declare it to the insurance company prior to the accident.  HTH
