Friend is a L&D nurse, on call when you are there- are you ok with it?

A friend of mine (not super close but I see her often enough) asked when I would be having my repeat c/s. She is a L&D nurse at the hospital I am deliverng at and at first I thought nothing of it that she would be there at some point when or after I give birth. But maybe I am over thinking it but I keep envisioning her checking my incision, taking out my catheter and other TMI, gross situations and then having her over for a BBQ- too weird or not a big deal? WDYT!?!

  • I'm pretty sure I would be okay with it. She might be nicer to you than another patient.

  • Honestly, not a big deal to me.  It's her job.  And she'll be extra nice to you since you know her. Nothing worse than a mean nurse!

I think it's fine! It would be good to have someone there that you know.

  • Eh, I'm not all that modest so it wouldn't bother me.  In fact, my neighbor/friend is a nurse and may be taking shifts at the hospital I deliver at (she worked in L&D there before and now she teaches)... I'd be happy for her to come & check on me.
  • I would request not to have her as my nurse because you "know her".  Let them know too, that you don't want her to know that you didn't want her as your nurse.

But then again, she would probably be super nice too because she knows you. Who knows...maybe she will request not to take care of you because she's uncomfortable with it.

  • My l&d nurse came in to see me when I worked at BRU and to A's birthday party and I never even thought about it. Of course I've seen her whip her nip out to bf so I guess we're even.

  • Hey there! I vote for weird too - but i'm a bit of a prude ;-)

can't be any worse than the male 20-something nurse I had on my last day in the hospital...I was ok with him checking my incision but when he practically pulls down my mesh underwear and says "how's the bleeding" I almost leaped off the bed. eeeewww. took me a while to get past that. yeah, i'm a prude.

  • Being a nurse, I can say - it's nothing she hasn't seen before, especially in L&D.  However, if you're uncomfortable, they can totally assign someone else to you!

  • My guess is that she would ask not to be assigned to you as your nurse, but maybe just wants to know so she can drop in and visit.  I am an RN and I would never want to be assigned to someone I knew.  It just feels too weird and you learn way more about that person than you ever want or should know.
