MoMs of boys...

Just wondering - my boys are almost 8&1/2 months old now and were born at 35 weeks with no complications...they seem like they are WAY far behind where DD was at their age - she was already crawling, holding her own cup, sitting up etc., and they do none of these things.  Is it because they are delayed or because they are boys???

i'd say it's because they're boys. i'm friends with girl quads the same age as my boys, and they're a lot more advanced than the boys in so many ways (mostly gross motor skills.)

  • I agree that it's because they are boys...and b/c they're not the first child(ren). My oldest dd was way advanced. ?She crawled, walked, and talked very early so it is hard for me to tell what is normal. ?Now with the twins, my dd is much more advanced than my son but not as far ahead as #1.?

I think it is b/c with the first, I had nothing to do all day but hold, talk, and play with her all day long. ?Now with three in the house I am constantly doing laundry, picking up toys, making, serving and cleaning up meals, etc. They do have more independent time. But they also get the same amount of attention and it still seems that ds is behind in skills compared to dd which the dr told me is 'just a boy thing'. The twins also have their big sis (aka little mommy) to communicate and do things for them so they have less will to do it on their own.?

I'd give them some time, if you are still concerned talk to your pedi or have early intervention come evaluate.?

  • I've heard that's true about boys and girls, regardless of whether they're multiples or not.  For some reason, girls just seem to do better than boys do.  As long as their pediatrician isn't concerned, I wouldn't worry about it.  Each baby is different, regardless of when someone says they *should* be doing certain things.
  • Every baby is different - my friend's daughter - first child, born at 39wks -   didn't start crawling until she was 10 months, and isn't walking yet at 1 year. so like pp said, as long as your pedi isn't worried, you shouldn't be. Here is a helpful chart to see where your guys should be in terms of skills/milestones.

I have b/g twins (my first children) and admitedly i was expecting ds to be behind as far as motor skills because i had heard the same thing about girls being quicker to reach those milestones. surprisingly, they have been pretty equal in terms of development. like i said, every baby is different!

  • I think because they are boys. My dd has done a lot of things faster then the boys, she learned to sit up and crawl before them and she also talks more them. The one thing she took her time on was walking. She did not walk till a month after the boys at 18 months.
  • Its a BOY thing!  All my friends who have girls started things way earlier than all my boys.  And my friends who had girls first are totally freaked out that their "boy" isn't doing the same things/same time!  :)
  • I should add, my first DS didn't crawl until 11.5 months - walked at 16 months.  He's fine - and let me tell you, now that the twins are close to walking, 16 months is HEAVEN!  lol.
