when to worry about a cough?

This may be such a stupid question, but I'm watching/listening to DS on the monitor coughing and I'm a little nervous. It's not a seal like croup kind of cough, and he;s sort of just doing it in his sleep. He has a cold right now and is a snotty mess. We gave him benadryl to dry up his sinuses. I know I'm being a bit dramatic, but tell me a cough is nothing to worry about and he'll wake up in the morning no worse for the wear. Pretty please.

Re: when to worry about a cough?

  • I'm sure he's probably fine. He's probably just clearing the drainage from his throat. As long as it doesn't last too long or accompany a fever, and doesn't keep getting worse or keep him awake at night, he's ok.
  • worry when he is wheezing and struggling to breathe or breathing too fast.

a cough is the body's way of trying to clear out stuff, so it's sort of good, even when it sounds bad. But if he really sounds like he's struggling to breathe, you want to take him in.

ds had pneumonia and was wheezing like crazy and breathing super fast and choking.  it suuuuucked.

Good luck! Having a sick baby is the worst!
