Babies: 9 - 12 Months

DD scratched her eye, what should we do?

DD woke up from her nap and while I was feeding her I noticed her left eye was tearing up and her eye was red, I laid her down and can see a scratch 1/4" long on her eye.  There is nothing coming out of it, her eye is just red and watery.

The pedi is closed today, we just called an got the answering service, our options are wait until they open at 7am tomorrow or take her to the ER of the children's hospital now.  She is acting fine and not showing any indications that she is in pain, she is eating and playing normally.

I am not sure this warrants a trip to the ER, I know she is at risk for infection and we are talking about her vision being at risk....help me please!

Re: DD scratched her eye, what should we do?

  • Personally, I might take her in, just because I don't like to screw around with stuff like that. (I took DS to the emergency room when he was 2 months old because one of our dogs scratched at his eye - he was fine but it made me feel better at least!)

On an unrelated note, our children look so similar to me! They could be cousins...or am I crazy?  :)

  • She probably just scratched her lens. She should be ok. If it is still tearing and draining later tonight or tomorrow, then I would call.

  • My ds banged a toy in his eye recently, so we've just gone through this.  There is a big difference if it is in the colored part of the eye compared to the white.  If the redness is in the white part, it is no big deal.  It should clear up on its own within days.  If the scratch is in the colored part, it may warrant a visit to the doctor.  There is a ton of info on webmd.com.  Hope this helps.
