My dog just got skunked

OMG.  You think the smell is bad from the road, try 2 feet from you.  I gagged and couldn't get any closer to my dog.

We washed her with a solution recipe I found online, but the house still smells of it from the open windows.  I hope it goes away by tomorrow since we're having a party.

YUCK!

    tomato juice.

Dog smells good now, but I wish I could spray the house down with it.

  • Gross! I live right by a major forest and we have skunks like crazy around here.  I have actually seen them in our apartment parking lot several times and am scared of getting skunked myself, that would be awful.
  • even better than tomato juice is if you had a garden, you take almost rotted tomatoes and squash them and bathe the dog in it.

Echo: Your LO reminds me of the little boy on the Luvs diaper package! :-)

  • A word of warning from a former groomer: the smell might come back every time your dog gets wet.  I used to groom a golden retriever who had gotten skunked 3 times in one summer (poor boy).  I had to bathe him in de-skunk shampoo every single time he came to get groomed for a good 4 months as the smell would come back as soon as I hosed him down for shampooing.
  • OMG Spray a mixture of vinegar & water on all fabric surfaces. That should take care of the smell as it dries. Keep the windows open.?

Too bad it didn't happen at the end of last season when we had tons of those.  Right now all of my tomatoes are sprouts.

Does he? I'll have to check out them next time I'm at the store!

I'm hoping the baking soda will neutralize that.  If not, I'm sad.

Great idea!  I will do that!

  • Good luck.  :)  If you do encounter that problem, you might want to pull out the big guns in the form of a natural de-skunking shampoo.  We used a decent one at the salon I worked in and it usually did help with the smell until the next time. You might not have that problem, though, depending on your dog's coat type.  The golden had very thick hair and a thick undercoat, as well, so that probably hindered the complete erradication of the smell.  I don't recall the smell lingering nearly so long on dogs like beagles.

She's a boxer, so a very short coat.  I will cross my fingers.

  • It sounds like you've got a good shot, then.  :)  I hope the mixture works on your furniture.
