Does your 2 year old answer questions?

DS turned 2 at the end of March.  He will answer yes and no questions and most of the time to a question like "What is that?"  or "What are you eating?"  However people will ask him his name/how old he is/if he wants a brother etc an he never answers..I have been trying to practice at least the common questions with him.  Is this normal?  TIA!!

Yes, Kate answers questions, but she would never answer them if strangers asked her them.  She's shy for strangers and talks much more to DH, me and people she knows well.

Is it because he is shy?  Maybe he is just shy and does not want to answer other people.  Will he answer you?  My dd talks ALL the time and will answer anything you ask her, but sometimes she will not answer strangers because she is playing shy.

DS can only answer yes and no questions.  He has only a few words, those are 2 of them. 

 We are trying to teach him to hold up 2 fingers for being 2 when asked how old, but he is not getting it yet.

DS answers questions like that about 50% of the time with strangers - the rest of the time he clams up/is shy. He can say his name (he now says his full name - 1st, middle, and last - which cracks me up), his age, and simple questions. We just had dinner out and he answered the waitress when she asked him what he wanted to eat... He does basically one word answers, though.

This sounds just like DD.  She will answer questions all the time when we ask her (she will even answer with "I don't know"), but when other people ask her how hold she is..or what color something is...she becomes super shy and refuses to talk.  She knows the answers..like pp's mentioned she just clams up and gets very shy.

She'll answer questions at home but is always too shy in public.
