Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

hey here's a DUMB question

When your LO is walking, how do you fix your hair???

I'll explain, it takes me a good 30-40 mins to dry my hair.  Ridiculous, I know.  As of right now, I can leave Kenley in the exersaucer and she'll play/watch me get ready.  Those days are numbered and I'm just kinda wondering how you get ready when they're walking.

um...no...I don't do that....I just reeeeeeally like my dryer.  Embarrassed  Yeah I have naturally curly hair and I can't stand it most of the time.  Trust me, if you had hair that frizzed at the drop of a hat, you wouldn't want it.

  • Easy, I don't fix my hair, lol. I'm sure that's not the answer you were looking for. My DD is scared of the hairdryer (starts screaming as soon as she sees it!) and since my DH works out of town most of the week I just let air dry and then put in in a ponytail. When I do actually fix my hair I have to have someone else around to keep an eye on her.
  • I straighten my hair too. I wash it at night and let it air dry. In the morning I section it and flat iron it with the Chi. DD is usually in her crib (in my room) or tugging on my pjs :)

  • I blow dry/CHI my hair at night late when DH is home.  I wash it during nap time at 2 when Harm is sleeping and I keep it in a braid.  That makes it go a lot faster!

  • I usually wash my hair at night and blow dry it. Then in the morning I just have to use the straightener. Saves a lot of time!!

Anyway, in the morning I usually take a shower while DH watches DS eat breakfast, DH leaves shortly after I get out of the shower. DS is still in his high chair finishing up and watching either Sesame Street or Backyardigans while I do my make-up/straighten my hair. Then I finish DS' breakfast with him, and I get him ready for daycare.

It's rough though if we're going out and I try to get ready when it's not breakfast time lol. He's constantly walking into the bathroom from the living room...back and forth.

  • I let it air dry unless something special is going on. Otherwise, I close the doors in the upstairs hallway, close the gate at the top of the steps and let him run in the hallway and in the bathroom. Yes, one stuffed toy has been dunked in the toilet using this method, but he survived.
  • She's not walking yet, but I I put DD's highchair right by the bathroom door and leave the door open. She eats breakfast while I shower and do my hair.
  • I was and air dry at night. In the morning, I straighten. DS is with me the whole time in the bathroom or he'll run into our bedroom. I have some toys upstairs for him to play with. Some mornings it goes smooth and some mornings I find him smooshing my lipstick between his fingers and he's covered in a lovely shade of pink. That's why some days I probably look more frazzled when I'm done getting ready then before I began.

This, except I just move out to the playroom. It went really well. :)

  • honestly, I usually shower and dry my hair at night after DD's in bed. If I do need to get ready in the morning, I turn on Sesame Street in our bedroom and leave the bathroom door open so I can always see her. That and some good toys, sometimes a fruit bar, and she's good to go!

  • I shower at night and let my hair air dry.  Then in the morning I put DS in his bumbo chair in our bedroom with some cartoons on.  This usually keeps him occupied for a few minutes.  Then he escapes from his bumbo and I just let him crawl around my room and bathroom while I finish straightening my hair.

  • I have to get entirely ready for work with DS, and he's walking.  Our solution was to REALLY babyproof the bathroom and my closet - he can walk and play freely in there.  I keep a basket of toys for him, and he also loves to brush his teeth.  SO, he gets the toothbrush and plays, brushes his teeth, etc.  He stays entertained for about 30 minutes this way while I put on makeup, dress, dry my hair, etc.  If he's ever bored, I let him go out into our bedroom, which is not quite as babyproofed, but it's still okay for him to wander.  Also, I "play" with him with the hairdryer by blowing it in his face every few minutes to make him laugh.

  • DS is close enough to walking for me to answer your question, the rugrat pulls up and cruises constantly.  When I'm in the shower, he's in one of those doorway jumpers.  When I'm out and he can see me, he gets pissed in the jumper so I take him out and let him roam.  I've babyproofed the cabinets and keep a stash of toys there.

Actually though, I do ponytails most of the time b/c of the heat and b/c of DS's tugging on my hair (ouch!).

  • Does she take a morning nap?  If so, you could do it then.  My hair is as straight as can be so I just let it air dry.
  • ditto the other posters.....I wash my hair at night and air dry. Then I flat iron it the next day. Sometimes, if I really have to shower, dry and style on the same day, I just let DD roam in our room. She'll usually open up all our dresser drawers and take everything out. She leaves a huge mess, but at least I know she's doing something "safe" and not sticking her hands into anything dangerous.

  • Imprisionment does not work for us.  DD would cry her eyes out if I did that.  Luckily, with walking has come sleeping in a tad later.  So instead of 6am she's sleeping till 7.  Which means I can at least get showered and partly ready.  Before that, I would leave her in the hallway near the bathroom with her activity table and some books.  She plays and walks and I get ready.  We're kinda blocked off in a hallway so she can't go too far.

But honestly, if it took me 30-40 mins to blow dry my hair I would 100% chop it off or I would never do it!.  There's just no way I could do that everyday and deal with DD.  I have shorter hair and it takes some time to dry it and then I straighten it.  But total with showering and makeup it takes me about 40mins to get ready.  I can't imagine just blow drying my hair for that long!  I recently got my hair cut shorter and it cut my drying time in half and things are SO much easier!

  • I also think it depends on the stage of walking. DS has been walking 3 months so he is to the point now where I just put up the gate at the top of the stairs and let him tear apart the 2nd floor. I get ready in my walk-in closet and before we were at this stage, I would grab a sippy cup and some toys and bring him in there with me. Which is why he usually ends up in there now, on the floor playing with makeup cases, purses, belts, lotion bottles, makeup compacts...basically whatever he can get his hands on.?

The showering and blow dry the night before just doesn't work for me so this was the best thing I could come up with.?

    This!

  • Frankly, it's easier for me to get ready now that he's fully mobile, bc he can wander around and amuse himself while I'm getting ready... I usually shower when he's taking his morning nap, but he does follow me around when I'm getting dressed or ready - we have a bathroom connected to our bedroom, so I usually close the door to the bedroom and he wanders around - I have showered with him locked in the bathroom with me, and the most he did was shove toys in the clothes hamper - I gave him some toys/books he was super-excited about at the moment to play with, also.

He's no longer scared of the hair dryer, and so if I do use it, he wanders in and out - but, it only takes me 10 min at most to blow-dry my hair, and I don't do anything else to it.

I have to agree with pp that I'd be cutting my hair if it took that long to get ready - but I'm super-low-maintainence (i.e. lazy)  when it comes to all things beauty/hair/make-up related

  • I set my alarm for 5 or 5:30 to make sure I'm 100% done getting ready before they wake up.
Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • My bedroom is 100% babyproof (knock on wood) and I plug the straigtner and blow dryer in behind my dresser and mirror. She can not reach the cords.

She just runs around while I get ready.
