Babies: 9 - 12 Months

For those with guns in your home.

Would you offended if someone visiting for a playdate 1-- asked you if you had guns in your home, and 2-- opted out b/c you did?

Curious.

  • No, i would not be offended. I would understand if they were not comfortable with it! Our friends know we have guns...but they also know they are locked away! I would be fine with dd going somewhere that had guns, but i will ask if they are locked up or not. If i saw them lying around, there is no way in helllll that i would let dd play over there!

  • no and no

Its one thing if the guns are not loaded and locked up safely, but there are just so many tragic stories of kids getting into firearms and hurting/killing themselves on accident. It's not worth it.

  • well, i don't have guns. but dh is dying to get one (or two) and i told him he is buying a safe before he even gets a gun. he's ok with that.

no, i wouldn't be offended at the question, but no one has ever asked. i'm from oklahoma - a LOT of people have guns.

i would be offended if they wouldn't come over because my h has a gun, knowing that i had it safely secured and not even a prisoner would be able to crack it.

  • I wouldn't be offended at the question, but I would be offended after I told them that they are locked up and don't come out until hunting season if they decided to opt out. My husband hunts.

  • If DD is going to there house, I would know them well enough and trust that they are responsible gun owners. I am a police officer and have a few guns, but they are well out of DD's reach. I hope my friends with kids would trust that they were safe at my house.
  • DH is a police officer, it comes with the territory. He doesn't leave them lay around like that other fool though. Everyone knows DH is a cop and so far don't mind it that we have guns in the house.

But, I wouldn't be offended if someone didn't want to have the playdate knowing we have guns and if they opt out that's on them. Playdates with children should be supervised anyway, so it really technically shouldn't be a problem, KWIM?

  • as a person who plans to ask and then opt out if the answer is yes, this is actually nice to see.  because i have heard from one mom that she was lied to and told there were no guns and then found out after the fact that there were.
  • We have a few guns, but they are not out for home protection. We keep them in the attic, so it is a non-issue. I would tell the truth that we have them, but there is no way a child would come into contact with them.

this exactly.  however we only have the guns at our cabin in VA and they are not loaded so in the city it wouldn't matter.
