Dental filling question...

I went to the dentist yesterday, because one of my fillings in my back molar was feeling really sensitive to heat and cold. He couldn't find any decay or cracks or anything, so he drilled out and replaced the filling.

If anything, the sensitivity to heat and cold is WORSE in that tooth today. Do you think that will subside over the next few days, or should I give him a call again?

Re: Dental filling question...

  • I'd call again.  Sounds like they missed something.  I have had to have 2 old fillings replaced with onlays (the procedure right before a root canal).  It is like a crown that goes over the entire tooth.  Plus, it's a holiday weekend, so I'd definitely call today.
  • definitely call sounds like you need a crown or possible a root canal too

  • I disagree, especially if it was a fairly big filling.  I had a big filling replaced in a back molar and my dentist said it would feel a little twingey (and sensitive) for a few days because the nerve gets a little knocked around, but it will feel progressively better. . . and it did.

  • Beth, it was a huge, old filling, and he said it was deep. Good to know that it's likely to feel better.

He said there were no visible issues with decay or anything, and no need for a root canal that he could determine.

  • That's exactly what mine was. . . I think I got it when I was about 8 years old.
