Here's a link to an interesting article about how name choices move through socio-economic group.

  • That is a tough one. A lot of people are named after their grandparents, so possibly whatever names were popular in 1970 or so will be popular again (Linda? Lynn?)

When did Emery become a girl name? That is my uncle's name.

Names also come and go because of literary or tv popularity. Look at how Aiden exploded after SATC and Emma after Friends. Who knows what will come up then?

  • I've read this article before ... and it's interesting. I was named Stephanie in the very early 70s, before it became common and "low-end" about 10-15 years later. It was very uncommon when my mother named me that, particularly where we lived. She was ahead of the curve. ;-)

Naming trends are cyclical, so I think by 2020, people will be rediscovering the mid-century 1950s names like Betty, Nancy, Joanna, Carolyn ...

Most professional "namers" disagree on your last point, at least to an extent. Usually the TV is just a symptom of the trend that's already emerged. Emma was already catching on among the higher-end set when Friends used it. Addison the same with Grey's. I already knew several Aidens pre SATC.

Anyway, I think they often pick up-and-coming trendy names for TV characters more than  the other way around, but reality TV seems to have a measurable effect.
