Standing in bathtub

Natalie seems to love standing in the bathtub.  Even though we have a no slip mat on the bottom, I still worry about her doing this - slipping and hitting her head on the side.  How did you curb your child's desire to keep standing?  So far it's been a huge struggle to keep her sitting in the tub.

Re: Standing in bathtub

  • If she is all clean and just playing I would warn her and if she continues to stand I would take her out of the tun. This is how we have handled things like that with dd. After a few times she has gotten the hint.

  • Eh - I warned him a few times and he fell a few times.  He got the idea after he bonked his noggin one time.  Then he grabbed my hand to sand until he was more sure of himself.

I will say we tried one nonslip mat and it was slippery.  The one we have now makes all the difference.  It's white, kinda like the stuff you can put in your cabinets.  After we got this one he's only slipped 1 or 2 times.

  • Yeah, I don't know how to handle this either.  Liam stands from the moment we put him in the tub.  His baths tend to last 5 minutes or less - we just scrub him down and get him in and out as quickly as possible because he's a slippery squirmy monkey in the tub!

We did the same. ?We clean her up pretty quickly and then give her time to play. ?If she stands during cleaning time we have a hand on her and scrub her since she is up. ?If she stands during play time she gets a warning and if she does it again, bath time is over.

She understood very quickly and hasn't done it in a long time.

  • I'll have to keep all this advice in mind...unfortunately DS likes to crawl around in the bath water after his ducks and likes to try and stand up with the side of the tub....but I just have to keep sitting him back down..I dont think he's old enough to do what most of u said u did cuz I dont think he's old enough to understand the cause and effect concept. I guess Ill just have to keep showing him he has to sit down. Oh the fun we have to look forward to with bath time so it seems!

  • I guess I'm kind of lax.  I just let Nate stand in the tub.  As long as he stays on the mat, it's fine.  He likes to play with the duck faucet cover and it gives me an opportunity get his bottom clean.  ;)  He did fall once at my parents' house (they don't have a nonslip mat in their tub) so if I bathe him there, I get him in & out quickly and don't let him stand.

She likes to do the same thing -- play with the duck faucet cover.  She usually starts standing up almost immediately on getting in the tub which is helpful for cleaning her bum and legs but then makes it difficult to wash her hair, etc.  I usually hold her hand or arm when she's standing, just in case.  I may try washing her up faster first and then see how she does with playing and wanting to stand.

I'm not very good yet at instilling "no" in her yet when it comes to things like standing in the tub or throwing her food.

Me neither!  Liam's still in the duck tub, since I need to get a non-stick mat for the regular tub (and THAT is what I couldn't remember that I knew I needed to get at Target today - glad I remembered LOL!)  Once he's in the regular tub, we'll have to see how it goes.

  • Standing in the tub is so dangerous. I would highly recommend all of you teach your children to sit as early as possible so when they are 2 or 3 they understand. They fall a lot harder the older they get.
We were at the beach last year and my bff let her child stand in the tub some. Her daughter fell and hit her head and mouth really bad. She was right there with her and even had a hand on her but she was so slippery and it happend so fast. SMS and evans are what we did as well.
