Ever since I switched DS over to whole milk (about 3 weeks ago) he has had really yucky diapers with bad diaper rash. We transitioned him to milk very slowly so I thought his tummy would be used to milk by now. I called the pediatrician and she said it sounded like it could be a milk allergy and recommended I switch him to soy milk. I was wondering if it could be more of a lactose intolerance issue b/c his diapers aren't always loose. He has his 15 month appt. soon so I will ask her more about it then. Any recommendations for a soy milk brand? I forgot to even ask about yogurt and cheese and if he could still have those. Thanks for the advice!
Re: Anyone's child have a milk allergy/intolerance?
Zachary is allergic to milk. He drinks the plain flavor Silk soymilk most of the time, unless an organic brand is on sale or cheaper.
If your DS is truly allergic to milk, you want to avoid all milk products, including yogurt and cheese. Zachary broke out in hives all over his face, neck and shoulders when he was 9 months old after I gave him a snack that contained cheese. Both a blood test and skin test confirmed the allergy.
If you think it is lactose intolerance, you could try one of the lactose-free milks. Definitely talk about it in detail with your pedi! GL!
DD had a milk protein allergy/intolerance but has outgrown it. Did DS drink formula or BF prior to the whole milk switch? Many kids with the milk protein intolerance have problems with soy, too (the protein chain is very similar, so their digestive systems have the same problems trying to break down the protein,) so you might have to try a few different things (maybe rice milk) before you notice a difference. That being said, DD took a while to adjust to the whole milk, probably about a month, and we did it pretty slowly, too.
Depending on how severe the problem is, cheese and yogurt can sometimes be ok. We did yogurt for a while before switching to milk, and she never had a problem with that. Before she was a year, DD had a combination of Alimentum and BM (I had to cut out all dairy, soy, and their derivatives from my diet.)
I didn't mean to write a book. I apologize!
DS was BF until close to a year when we had to supplement with formula.
Did you have any major digestive issues/diaper rash issues when BF or with regular formula? I would think (although I am not a doctor
) that you would have noticed a problem if the allergy was severe. DD had eczema and blood in her stool, which was how her pedi diagnosed her allergy/intolerance. Those things cleared up when I completely eliminated all dairy & soy products.
If you didn't have problems, hopefully that means that DS is just having some problems getting used to whole milk and will be able to tolerate it with time. Also, most children outgrow milk allergies, so that's a positive thing.
We had the same issue and dr. suggest we switch DD to lactose free whole milk. it made a complete difference. She isn't really bothered by cheese or yogurt. I would try that before switching to soy.
My DD has a milk protein allergy and is on Silk Vanilla Soy Milk. She can't have cow or goat's milk, any dairy products or even butter.
It's pretty nasty in our home if she consumes anything with the slightest bit of milk.
She also has some wicked ezema on her hands and feet.
