? re.your 15 mo old and "language" skills

How well does your toddler speak? What do you think of Nathan's skill level? Is this normal? 

Nathan says "Mama" "Dada" "Dog" "Flower" "Toes" while pointing to us or the object/body part in questions, so I know for sure he knows what he's referring to. Also, If I say "Where is _____", he will point to his cars, ball, nose, ear, hair, teeth". He can also identify a few animals (dog, monkey, lion) by pointing in picture books. He understands me when I speak in full sentences ("Where is you playroom?", and he points to the room). He also knows ASL for "milk", "food", "more", "bath".

 I know every child is different, but I'm seen posts about toddlers his age speaking in two-word sentences. I read to him all the time, even when he doesn't seem to be paying attention. We point things out and repeat the word several time and say what it's for. ("Chair, We sit on it" kinda stuff). I'm also planning on going to playdate with older kids, so that he can hear kids talking. Anything else I whould be doing?

I think that sounds great for 15 months! I think you guys are right on track, just keep modeling sentences for him and he should catch on. fwiw, my 18 month nephew only says mama. I know he (nephew) is kind of behind, but I think Nathan is doing great! And keep reading!!

Gage is about the same age and only says a couple words as well.  The only two word "sentence" he says is "Whatsthat?" and it all runs together like that!  lol

My sister's youngest is 2 and his vocabulary isn't much more than that.

Sounds like he is right on track.  Boys are usually a little behind girls in language development, and every child is going to be different.

your son sounds like he is doing great! at 15 months I would say he is doing above average (scoring what a 18 monh old should do). Here is what the Mayo clinic says about speech developement.

Eli was delayed a bit in speech but now is doing great. Save yourself alot of needless worry and dont compare your son to other peoples children. Some children are gifted and develope early and others, well lets just say some mommies exaggerate a bit.

If you still feel concerned make a appointment to see his doctor and they should be able to ease your mind

it is a very vfery very rare 15 month old that speaks 2 word sentences!  If you're seeing a lot of those posts, you're seeign a lot of exaggeraters.

 

at 15 months, Ben said maybe 3 words.   At 2 years he was barely starting to do 2 word sentences.   My ped said he was a teeny bit behind but she wasn't worried at ALL because he's a boy, and they're often behind in language, and he was so far ahead in gross motor skills, it was clear he was focusing on that.

 

I have heard 20 words by 20 months as a "rule" to watch for.

 

There's nothing you can do.  he'll talk when he talks.  and they all do.  And then they don't shut up.

Here's a really good questionnaire about development.   In each 'section' your kid "should" be doing a couple of the things... not all of them.  I like it because it gives you some ideas of things that they can do at this age, and at the end, it gives you some good play ideas for the age too.

In my parenting class the teacher said some kids advance in their language skills where others advance quicker in other areas. To me he sounds like he's doing great. My step-son is 3 and we had a 2 yr old over here the other day and he spoke nearly as good as Nolan so I think it just depends you know? It's just like potty training. Some kids are ready at 2 where our 3 yr old understands completely how to, but just doesnt want to yet.
