A lot of people on this board (including me) want to use girl names that will grow with them into adulthood, but I love cute, girly-sounding nicknames. I was wondering if any of you had considered using some of the older, more vintage nicknames for classic names even if they don't necessarily sound like the original. For example:
Margaret nn Daisy
Mary nn Molly or Polly
Sarah nn Sally or Sadie
Charlotte nn Lottie
I think several of these are adorable but I'm curious to see what y'all think.
Re: Vintage Nicknames
I really like Daisy, Molly, Polly and Sadie.
I also love Maisie (another nn for Margaret.) I wish it could be a nn for something else b/c I just don't like Margaret. Sometimes I think about using it a a nn for Mariana but I'm not sure if that is silly.
I know a Margaret who goes by Maggie.
Thought of Dot for Dorothy.
I also know women who go by Kitty and Cookie, but I have no idea what their real names are...
I love nicknames like that. I particularly like Maisie or Daisy for Margaret, Lottie for Charlotte, Libby or Lily for Elizabeth (not quite so old fashioned, but still unusual), Kitty for Katherine, and several others that I can't think of now! Too bad DH does not see the point and hates all of them. :-(
I'm also a fan of little girl nicknames that don't necessarily have anything to do with the given name -- Bunny, Kiki, etc. They usually outgrow these, and they generally aren't used outside the family, but I still like them.
Mildred or Amelia nn Milly/Millie
Mary nn Molly
Elizabeth nn Beth
Susannah nn Anna
I knew a Cricket once, but her real name was Virginia. I always thought that was odd. I'm generally not a fan of nicknames that don't appear to have any kind of relationship with the real name.

I also like the idea of Maisie for Margaret. Not a fan of Maggy, for some reason it reminds me of macaroni and cheese.
Also love Molly and Sadie.
Cordelia nn Cora
Eleanor or Elizabeth nn Elle or Ellie
Priscilla or Marilla nn Rilla
Penelope nn Penny
Theresa or Contessa nn Tess or Tessa
Winnifred nn Winnie
I don't think anyone was implying that giving your child a nickname as a full name would keep them out of the corporate world.
I was just saying that I like the older nicknames that you don't hear as much with an option for a longer full name.

I'm a Cricket (Christine). My mom (Kathleen) was called Kitten by her father as a little girl and Tiger as a teenager.
(a couple of fist fights sticking up for yourself will do that).
And I am a big fan of the "vintage" nicknames - especially Sadie.
I love Betsy and Maggie
We are naming our daughter Charlotte and my husband wants to call her charlie. That is how I got him to like the name. he wanted a name with an EE sound at the end. But I am going to call her Lola.
What about Emmy for Emelia ?
One of my friends uses Maisie as a nn for Elizabeth Marie.
We are almost completely basing how we name our LO on her possible future nicknames.
(Granted we actually haven't agreed on a name yet ;-)
But I LOVE Sadie, and my husband does too, but he wants it as a nickname, but I am not crazy about Sarah (sorry to any Sarahs out there) Mercedes can go with Sadie as well, but again, not crazy about it.
We are considering Katherine for Katie, Samantha for Sam, Josephine for Jo . . . I could go on and on.
