Babies: 0 - 3 Months

your opinions please (baby shower gift)

friends of ours are having their first baby this summer. I was looking at their registry online and most of the items seem totally useless and non relevant for atleast 2 years (a potty seat!) I would like to get them things that we found useful even though they didnt register for them. what would you do? follow the register or get what you thought to be more practical?

Re: your opinions please (baby shower gift)

  • You know what to get them... they have no clue.  Get some useful stuff... give the gift receipt, then it's their call if they want to feel stupid looking back!

  • I think it is fine that you don't follow the registry. I know some of our favorite gifts were those that we didn't register for, didn't even know about or thought that we would need..

Practical, a few of my new mom friends got me items not on my registry that they loved, it was really great

  • My friend made me a basket of a few of her favorite things. She included butt paste, swaddle blankets, soothie pacis and a few other things that she said she needed to survive.
  • Get something practical! At my office showers the best gifts always come from people who are actually parents -- they always have a good idea of what is really needed (not another adorable knit sweater-vest in a newborn size that will never be worn). I know DH & I had NO idea what we were doing when we registered!
  • My sister got me the diaper bag I registered for and then filled it with all the things that she used for her DD that she loved (comb, diaper creams, diapers, wipes, etc). That was the best gift I got at my shower and even though I didn't register for most of the stuff she got me, I really appreciated the fact that she got things that she knows works and that I would use for my DD.
  • Get them at least one thing off the registry and you can include a non-registry item with it.  Maybe they already went and bought all the practical things or a family member did.  Whatever you do include a gift receipt, especially if you go off registry.
  • Depends. Maybe they didn't register for those "practical" items because they got them from someone else.

Get something small off the registry and something else you think they'd like or need.

  • Are you sure they are not getting some of the stuff from close family or hand me downs? That may be why they didn't register for some stuff. If you do get them something that isn't on the registry, make sure you give a gift receipt so they can exchange it if need be.
