Babies: 0 - 3 Months

STTN question

My 3 month old DD slept all the way through the night for the first time on Friday, then she woke up at her usual time (3 am) on Saturday and last night she woke up at 3 am again but by the time we got the bottle ready  she had fallen back to sleep and slept all the way through again.  Do most babies sleep through the night once or twice and then regress or did your LO start STTN consistently?  I'm wondering if we should just soothe her back to sleep when she wakes up at 3 am or go ahead and feed...how do I know if she is hungry or just waking up b/c that is her pattern??

Re: STTN question

  • I started offering the paci. I thought if she was really hungry she would start crying after a minute or two of the paci. She never did, she always just falls right back to sleep.

  • Thankfully our LO STTN one night and has done it every night since for about 3 weeks now.  It was like one day he was waking up 1-2x per night and then one night he STTN and we were like WTF and then he kept doing it.  I'm still pretty surprised.

Sometimes he will fuss and it is because his arm might be stuck (he is a belly sleeper)  So I'll go readjust him and he falls right back to sleep.

I'd see if you can soothe her back to sleep, but if she wakes up again or doesn't go back to sleep I'd say she is hungry and needs a bottle.

  • Our LO STTN once or twice per week.  (She is 5 months.)  Usually she gets up around 4:00, drinks 4-6oz and then falls back asleep. Around 4 months I would put her in her crib after the 4:00 feeding and she began to soothe herself to sleep.  I say feed her if she will not go back to sleep.
  • My LO mixes it up.  Sometimes he STTN and other times he'll wake up once.  I usually feed him whenever he wakes up because I have no idea what woke him up and don't feel like figuring it out in the middle of the night!

we just found out from our Pedi the other day that around 3 and 4 months "most" should start STTN.  He said now is the time to try and let them try and soothe themselves to sleep again as well.  for example, if your LO is up at 3am, wait 5 min to see if they'll fall back to sleep again.  If he/she isn't crying, leave them alone.  If not, offer a Paci, blanket, lovie (which we are not comfortable with this young) and just pat or rub her back or tummy.

Pedi said not to pick her up or feed her or she'll think its ok to do this all the time.

Yes...still having a hard time with this new way of things.  5am shes up now, and she will not sleep until she's fed.   2am she stirrs a lot, but most of it she's sleeping.

    GL!

  • When my DD started STTN, it was a one night on - one night off sort of thing. She would wake up at 2 one night, sleep until 5 the next. Wake up at 3 one night then sleep until 6 the next. Then she would be up at 1 one night. It took about a week for it to get regular. So, I didn't STTN for a while because I was always wondering when she would be up. I just wouldn't respond immediately. If she was still fussing after 5 minutes - then I was up to get her. I still used the paci for sleeping at that point too. If she took it, she wasn't hungry.
