Sleeping too much?

My DS will be 4 weeks old tomorrow and I'm wondering if I should be waking him up so that he is sleeping less hours.  How much sleeping is normal at this age? I haven't really counted hours but it seems like he sleeps all day long in between feedings.  I'd say he has just an hour or more of truly "alert" time.  He generally wakes up because he's hungry and then is back to sleep after BFing.  What's your experience with a baby this age?  Thanks!

Re: Sleeping too much?

  • They say that at this age babies sleep around 20 hours...

My little guy likes to be awake from 1-3 hours but then there are days he doesn't seem to do that.

Your LO needs as much sleep as they can get right now...

  • That is normal for a 4 week old. I think once my DS his 6 weeks, he started staying up for an hour or so between naps.

  • My DS wasn't really alert until 4-5 weeks otherwise he would just sleep between feedings.  I woke him up during day time hours to feed him every 3 hours then I would let him sleep at night and wake us up and that worked really well and is now sleeping 7-8 hours straight at night.
