Parenting after a Loss

How old when LO to go in a pool?

We have a pool and I just called the pedi to see when we can bring ds in.  Whoever answered the phone asked the pedi and she said once he reaches 15lbs.  Why is that?  He's just about 11 lbs now & wouldn't think he's going to be at 15lbs any time soon.

When did/will you put LO in the pool?

TIA!

  • We have taken ours in twice already!  Maybe it is a body temperature thing and that's why they said 15 lbs?  I didn't even think to ask the pedi....

We were planning to bring Allie in the pool soon, our neighbor has a pool.  I guess I will ask the pedi at her appt on Monday.

  • Hmmm 15 pounds that seems like an odd reason?  We have a pool in our backyard and dh just got done putting the finishing touches on it so as soon as it warms up a bit we are jumping in.
  • J5 went in my ILs pool at 2 months.  Our pedi said it was fine.  He definitely didn't weigh 15 lbs.
  • All I know is they can't wear sunscreen until 6 mos. I am a little bummed about missing a whole summer of skiing!
  • Not sure why the 15lbs... We're planning on taking Ethan into DH's aunt's spool this weekend (mix between a spa/jacuzzi and a pool). Can't wait to see his reaction! He loves bath time :)

  • my sis (a pedi herself) said 6 months. Maybe that is because of the sunscreen thing? Or do they get too cold if they are smaller? or is it a chlorine issue? Our pool is really warm. I am going to ask our official pedi too to see what she says.

  • wait, am I totally clueless here...why no sunscreen until 6 months?  Even the baby kind?  We have put it on him twice already..oh no!
  • The YMCA has swim classes but the minimum age is 6 months. They don't say anything about weight.
  • my pedi said 6 months because of the chlorine. I am dying to take her swimming but we haven't had an opportunity yet.?

Not sure why 6 mos.  But when I spoke w/the pedi's office, she said to keep him covered & in the shade and to avoid the sun as much as possible.  She said I could apply some sunscreen as well to be safe.

  • We took LO to MIL's last weekend for her first dip in the pool. DH only dipped her legs in for about 2 minutes and we were in the shade. My friend who has a one yr old said her pedi said that it is ok to put sunscreen on babies under 6 mos. It is better to put sunscreen on them than it is to let them get burnt.
  • Thanks for the info!  I live in az so we apply sunscreen constantly here.  DS is so fair skinned that I just don't want him to burn!
