Security at your Hospital

Do you know what security policies your hospital has in place?  The ribbon on the door post below got me thinking and wondering if my hospital is just over the top w/ security or what policies your hospital has in place.

Mine:
No ribbons on the outsides of the door.  Too much information for strangers.

Baby wears an ankle bracelet that will sound an alarm if taken within 2 feet of an elevator.

There is a new password every 24 hours that only the hospital staff and parents knows.  Any time someone comes to get the baby from me (for check up, exam, etc) we are to ask them the password.

How about yours?

    Our hospital has this, too.

  • Mine has an in-room nursery.  It blocks off from the rest of the room so you cant see it but the only way in is through the mothers part...

Other than that anytime a nurse or doc comes in the room they match mom/dads bracelet to babies to be sure it is right.

  • Not sure I will have to ask when we go for our class tommorrow.
  • Our hospital has the ankle bracelet alarms - elevators will shut down if they get too close.  They will also have a bracelet on the other ankle that matches mine and DH's.  I will also keep him in the room - don't plan to let him out of sight of one of us as much as we can help it.
  • I'm not sure about the ribbon thing, but at our hospital, the alarm thing is actually attached to baby's ambilical stump. I guess they figured no one in thier right mind would try and rip that off. And then they wear just a normal hospital bracelet on the ankle that identifies with the mother and father. If the baby gets close to the doors or elevators, the alarm will sound. And for fam and visitors we just have to give them a code to get into the doors. If they don't have it, then they have to stop at the check in desk, and they call our room.

  • The maternity floor is locked.  If you show up after 8pm (visiting hours), you have to be escorted to the floor by security (you call your OB and they tell security you're coming).  If it's during visiting hours, you have to ring the bell.

The alarm thing is on the cord clamp.  If you go within a few feet of the door, they lock everyone in and lock the elevators leading to that floor.

There are the usual bracelets to match up if the baby leaves the room.

It's also a really small place.  There aren't a lot of people coming and going, which is nice.  And all of the nurses are familiar to me by now!

  • Ditto on the alarm on the ankle also they give mom, dad, baby bracelets with matching numbers and only we can hold babythe nurses won't give the baby to noone else. All nurses have a pink badge if someone other then a nurse with pink badge comes we are not to give them baby and call for a nurse.

    Our hospital has this, too.

Ours has two bracelets (on the ankle and wrist); the alarm thing is on the clamp for the umbilical cord.

The alarm sounds if they are taken out of the nursery and not scanned back into a "safe" zone within 90 seconds.

I like your hospital's policies. All of the birthing suites and the nursery at mine are in a locked area. You have to get someone to take you back there.

  • Ours is similar.  You have to be "buzzed" into the L & D department from the waiting room after speaking with a nurse.  There used to be a nursery window that anyone could go to to see the babies, but that is not the case at all.  If you are not there to see someone that has had a baby and know their first and last name, you are not admitted through the door.  They will come out to meet with you first.  Immediately after the cord is cut, they put the alarm device on your LO ankle.  The only one who will come in to ask to take the baby will be your nurse.  You have your own nurse for that entire shift and after shift change, you will get another one for the length of their shift.

  • We just had a tour of the birthing unit/rooms last night during our class. We were told that our baby will wear an ankle bracelet and an alarm will sound if she is taken out of the area. Also; mom and dad will wear an arm bracelet and they are the only ones the nurses will hand the baby too. At all times the baby must be in the basket if in the hallway. There is a area in the room where baby can stay instead of going to the nursery.

  • You can go up to the birthing center but you have to call the nurse and let them know who you are/why your there/or who you are visiting to get in.  Babies have two id ankle braclets (in case on falls off) and DH and I will both have one.  Baby is to be in hospital clothes until it's time to go home or for hospital NB pics.  Baby must be in basinett when in the hall.  You have to be let out by a nurse.

When my brother came to visit with DD he used my madien name and they wouldn't let him in until he got it right.

If the baby is in the hall, they have to be in their bassenett thing.  All babies wear a security anklet that sounds if they get too close to a door.  And all babies are strapped with the mothers info BEFORE they are removed from the delivery room and taken to the nursery.  You can NOT leave your room just holding the baby, otherwise you are asked to go back inside your room.
