BFing moms who took supplements (More Milk, fenugreek, etc)

I picked up some "lactation support" capsules at Whole Foods today. They have fenugreek, fennel seed, red rasp leaf, blessed thistle and marshmallow root.

How long did it take before you saw an increase in supply?

I also eat oatmeal every day, and drink a lot of water. DD has been nursing every hour and a half to 2 hours around the clock for the past week or two. I'd say it's a growth spurt, but it seems like an awfully long one. So I am trying to boost the boob juice.

I am worried that the 10-15 oz I have stashed won't be enough to cover the 7 hours of babysitter on Saturday night. She's really been eating THAT often!

  • I noticed a day or 2 later with the pills.  If I took the liquid fenugreek, it was like later that day

  • I notice an increase 12 hours later.  So I actually timed it to coincide with the before bed feeding.

  • OK, these are capsules filled with liquid, so it sounds as though I should be seeing some results by morning.

Thanks! I can always count on you guys for the answers. :-)

  • Are you eating regular oatmeal or the instant? I used to take the strongest fenugreek capsule I could find at my healthfood store. I think it was fenugreek seed or something. It was more concentrated than the regular fenugreek pills.

Is it by GAIA or something like that? I think I tried them.

I feel like I tried everything. The capsules seemed to take 12 hours to work, the liquid More Milk Plus worked 6 hours later, but was difficult to stomach.

  • I did fenugreek for about a week and then my dd had to go to the pedi for a routine checkup and he was NOT happy that I was taking it. He say it is all about supply and demand and that using fenugreek was not needed and could actually be hurting my child because there is no good research on it. I stopped immediately and never saw a difference in my milk. The only thing it did make happen was it made my pee smell like very strong maple syrup.
