Vacation or Home Improvement (clicky poll)

This has been the subject of much debate in my household lately. DH and I have been super stressed lately with work, life, etc., so we've been dreaming about taking a nice relaxing vacation somewhere this summer. We have a good chunk of money set aside right now, but it was earmarked for either new windows or new carpet throughout the house. I know we should spend it on something practical, but I just wanna be pampered and brought fruity drinks by the pool. So what would you do?

  • Is it enough that you could only use half on vacation and then buy new windows later in the year?

Well, we could use half on vacation this summer, save up for maybe 6 more months, and then probably have enough for windows by December / January. I suppose this is also a possibility...

  • I would probably do the windows or carpet.  Probably the windows b/c if you don't replace those in time you could end up with water damage, way more expenses, etc.

Could you do a weekend relaxing trip to relieve some stress?

Yes, and this is probably the most practical option. ::sigh:: The windows are original to the house, which is close to 50 years old, and they're in pretty rough shape. Not leaking, but they are always getting stuck, the screens are all broken, etc.

Maybe a weekend trip woudn't be bad. We do have a 3 day weekend coming up with Memorial Day. Maybe I'll go investigate cabins in Gatlinburg.

  • Is it possible to do a shorter vacation or search for a really smoking deal and do one of the home improvement projects?

Well, I found a really smoking deal on a couple all-inclusives in Mexico (since this trip wouldn't be until July, I'm guessing the swine flu thing will be gone by then). We could do a week for both of us, including airfare, for less than 2000. The problem is that that's a great deal but still a big chunk of our new window money.

I'm considering the weekend trip thing, possibly in conjunction with some super-cheap weekend camping trips over the summer too. Maybe we could pair those with enough alcohol to make it almost as relaxing.

Replace your windows, trust me. You do not want to deal with what can happen with leaking windows, etc.

Then see what you can put together for some weekend trips over the summer.

  • I voted for the windows but if it were me, I would probably end up spending it on vacation.  I'm bad like that.  Or, do a smaller (cheaper) vacation and get the windows a little later.

What about using some on a mini vacation...like a weekend away somewhere.  Then use the remainder for your home improvements.
