So I'm looking for a nice strong boy name... that's Nigerian. The only one I've kinda come up with is Tayo (pronouced tie-oh). What do you think- does it fit the bill.
My husband is Nigerian. He will be the first to tell you that there are several different languages within Nigeria, so the name you pick will be determined by the language you speak. For example, DH's native language is Igbo, so we can't pick a name that is of Yoruba descent. Does that make sense? So, which language are you picking from? Is DH Nigerian?
For a boy we've almost definitely decided on Tobechi (pronounced "toe-bay-chee; NN Toby), and for a girl, we've picked Amara.
I know there's a website that you can specify which Nigerian language it comes from... I'll see if I can find it.
One of my really good friends is Nigerian and speaks Ibo. His name is Okechukwu (prounounced Okay-chew-coo) and goes by Okey for short. His name mean's God's gift. I've always thought it was a cool name.
Sorry I wasn't more specific- most people don't know the different tribes/languages in Nigeria. My parents are Nigerian (though I was born in the US)- and ever since I was little I always liked the idea of having a name that tied me back to Nigeria. I am looking for a Yoruba name. I've looked at some of the baby sites, but not many jump out at me.
Thanks for that first link idacota. I have looked at the behindthename site. I have found that there are a lot of igbo names I like- but I think it'd be strange to pick an igbo name for a yoruba family.
I really like your name choices too!
Have you been to Nigeria with your husband? My husband hasn't gone there with me and I wonder how it would be for a non-nigerian.
You're right, I think it would be weird to have an Igbo name for a Yoruba family. I've tried to avoid looking at any other language's website for just those reasons, because I'm sure I'd find names I liked there! ;-)
No, I haven't been to Nigeria yet. We've only been married for just over a year. I can't wait though. DH is hesitant to take me, because he thinks it'll be too much of a culture shock for me. That being said, he hasn't been back in a couple years either. He says the next time he goes it'll be alone to "prep" things for me to go. We eventually want to build a house either in Nigeria or Sierra Leone, so he wants to go buy land and actually build the house before bringing me. But what's the fun in that? :-)
Yeah, it would've been smart to not look at any other language's name... but a lot of times on those site they just say "Nigerian" and it's always a second too late when I realize I like the name but can't use it!
Yeah I'm afraid of the culture shock thing with my husband too. Not that I've been to Nigeria all that often either.... I was there when I was little- then I returned back a couple of years ago. But I do want to be able to take my little one there and think it'd be nice for DH to go too. That's very cool that you guys are planning on building a house there. Is your plan to visit often or just to have a place to go when you visit. My parents are building a house there so I think we could just stay there.
Re: Need name help- kind of different
Considering your requirements I quite like Tayo, although it would get mispronounced all the time (rhymes with mayo). Ty would be a cute nickname too.
Sorry I can't offer other Nigerian suggestions.

You can click on one of the languages there, but you can't separate them by male/female once you select a language.

This one is specifically a list of Igbo names.
I would love to hear what you decide. :-)
