Emmie- I looked at your name clicky poll. I noticed you have Mary Jane. Would this be a serious consideration for your family??
I ask because my husband's late mother is Mary Jane, and my husband is dead set on the name. Anyone I've asked has real problems w/the name. I know that it's our decision...blahblahblah.... But I also know that naming is important. Have people reacted if you've shared the name? I know it's not favorable on your poll.
(Anyone else reading....feel free to weigh in!)
Re: *Emmie*/Names
We haven't started sharing our names with people, yet. And actually, the two that we've chosen aren't even on the list. That's in case we wind up with more than one.
I would use it, though. I think that once there's a person to go with the name and you just start calling her Mary or Jane or MJ or Pumpkinator or whatever people forget the other associations.
All of those names on that list are pre-1900 family names. Hence Lettice Missouri...which I think is hysterical and might use for a character, but would not actually give my daughter. Letitia, maybe, but not Lettice.
I do - as does Husband - really like Daniel Squire and Alfred Knight. Those are Montagues and at some point someone held those as titles before the emigration so they were given the names to remind the family of where we came from.
Interestingly - there used to be a *LOT* of Ulrichs, but he was a Loyalist and the son that I'm descended from was a Patriot. After the war, the Patriot sons bought off the daughter and the loyalist son (the first born, also an Ulrich - Ulrich senior had passed at this point) and banished them from the family. No more Ulrichs in my line.
I clearly like this stuff a little too much ;-)
Of course I have a grandfather named Orphus...and I think that'd be out of the running quite quickly!!
hm..Orphus...maybe for your children's first dog. It's a cool dog name.
