TMI- re: Mirena

Sorry in advance for TMI, but I was wondering if anyone has simmilar issues.

I had the Mirena put in back in October. Everything was pretty normal (spotting etc) Then last week I got some really nasty cramping during sex and have been getting it on and off since. Yesterday I got my period a week early, which I never do, and it wasn't "normal" period blood. I was thinking I should wait another month to see what happens, but H is worried since I never had issues like thins before. Any thoughts?  TIA

Re: TMI- re: Mirena

  • I have had more crampling since having the Mirena.... My periods have been lighter... I wouldn't be too worried but you could always call your gyn just to be sure!
  • I'm a new IUD user and had Paragard (this is the non-hormone version of Mirena) installed in December.  No problems with the first period (early April), no cramping, "normal" bleeding, and it lasted 3-4 days (all of this is normal for me, I've never had heavy or long periods).

But this month - Oh.My.Holy.Crap!! - I had major PMS, depression, mood swings for a week.  I cramped like a son of a gun for a few days.  And then the bleeding.  Oh, the bleeding!  36 hours of non-stop, bleed through a jumbo OB and heavy pad, right through my pants and down to my knees.  Bleeding through it all every 2 hours.  Waking up at night a few times, running, bleeding, dripping, to the bathroom to clean up.  Oh.My.God.

DH said he didn't realize how much work it is to be a woman and he realized that all of this monthly inconvenience is because he opted not to have his "man surgery" because we are done having children.  He said he was glad I got the Paragard (I've never used any contraception in my life!) but that he didn't realize how hard it would be on me.  He said he'd get his man surgery once we get employed/health insurance if this keeps up.

So - to answer your post - I don't have a handle on what is normal, but the reviews I've read do mostly point toward increased cramping and excessive bleeding.  Humph.

  • Yes.  To answer your question, the "consistency" is different.  Like rubber cement mixed with blood.

It's because one of the contraceptive actions of Mirena is to make your CF hostile (i.e. thicker).
