Reoccuring sinus infections?

DS had frequent ear infections which tubes solved, but now he has frequent sinus infections, or so the pedis say. He gets a cold, about a month later when its not gone we are at the pedi and get on an antibiotic. He has had about 7 of them in the last year. I spoke with the pedi about frequent use of antibiotics and he isnt concerned, but it still seems like I am constantly pumping him with these meds. We were just back there today because the last dose of medicine decreased his symptons but did not kick them. I know he would not prescribe something just for the sake of it, but can it be good to be on that many antibiotics so frequently?

Re: Reoccuring sinus infections?

  • You might consider taking him to an allergist for a consult.  Sometimes allergies can be an underlying factor with chronic ear and sinus infections.  I've also found that my allergists have been much more successful at getting rid of sinus infections than the regular doctor.
  • I'd take him to an ENT before the allergist.  I have has sinus problems my entire life according to the ENT after viewing my ct scans.  He said he could also see that it was most likely not from allergies but could see one if I wished but it would be a lot of testing to figure out any and everything.  I think to some degree everyone has allergies though.

Some people just have sinus problems.  I'm one of them.  I had a sinus surgery which only consisted of only being cleaned out - no reconstruction necessary since my septum is perfectly straight.  Maybe your DS's isn't straight?  How old is he?

  • I would strongly recommend taking him to an allergist.... alot of sinus infections are due to allergies (though not all of them, obviously).   You might be amazed at how much an allergist may be able to help by identifying allergies in your child.   Also, any child with recurrent infections should have their immune system evaluated to make sure there is no problem there that is responsible for their recurrent infections.   Allergists are all board-certified in Immunology as well, and know what tests to run for this.
