Lump in armpit...

I've had a lump in my left armpit for about a week now. ?When I asked the Dr. about it last week, he said that it was common to get lumps in your armpits and groin area during pregnancy, especially in early pg...He says it may stay there the entire pg! ?He also said that some women may even produce milk it their armpits. ?Are you serious?!?!?! ?I have NEVER heard of this before! ?I'm a little concerned because my mother is a 2x breast cancer survivor and I have had a few biopsies/lumps removed in the past. ?I just don't feel Dr. took it as serious as I would have liked!

  • I have heard the "lump in pregnancy" thing, but with a HX of CA in your family, and you've had a hx too.... I would find a new doc. Now. How dismissive!

This happened to a girlfriend of mine when she was pregnant.  She had a swollen milk duct in her armpit.  It went away, but it freaked her out until the doctor explained how common it is.  Keep an eye on it and if you are still worried, maybe seek another opinion.

  • I think I'd get a 2nd opinion also b/c of your family & personal history. Likely it is pg/hormone related but it would ease your mind.

The milk duct/breast tissue thing is true though- the embryonic milk line actually runs from your armpits all the way down toward the groin & that is why sometimes people will have that extra nipple(s) (a la the Friends episode...) or breast tissue in other places. I have a friend who got major enlargements in both armpits during IVF meds and pregnancy & her dr basically told her not to bother having it removed until after she was done having kids b/c  it would just come back w/ the next pregnancy.

  • Can you ask for an ultrasound of the area?  That way it would tell you if it's fluid filled or a solid mass.  I recently had an u/s of a breast because it was lumpy and I was pumping.  Having BC in your family, I'd definitely seek a second opinion or at the least, ask your OB for the ultrasound.
  • I had one too and it went away while i was still preg...but yes, with your family history, i'd get it checked out to be sure.
  • You need a 2nd opinion - it is 100% possible to get BC while you are pregnant. ?You have no way of knowing until it is ruled out.
