Multiples

Low Iron

My doctor just called me with the results of my blood test from my appointment yesterday and said my iron is very low.  Did any of you get low iron during pregnancy?

I am thinking that maybe this is why I have been ridiculously tired these past couple of weeks.....  I thought the second trimester was supposed to be the easiest!  Big Smile

Just curious if this is fairly common with multiple pregnancies.  If you did get it, did it get better soon after starting the iron supplements?

Re: Low Iron

  • Yep!  I'm anemic and have been since pretty early on, even though I was really trying to make sure I was getting enough!  But with multiples, they require so much more of all nutrients/vitamins.

Is your dr. putting you on iron supplements.  They aren't that bad.  See if they can give you a Rx for a prenatal with a stool softener.  The first week I was on iron supplements was pretty bad, but after about a week, my body just got use to it.  But the stool softener definitely helps!

The iron supplements should help give you some energy back!

  • Yep, it is common with multiples. They suck the iron right out of you! ;) I had to go on iron supps around week 30, and by my next appt, my iron was back up to safe levels. (I also started eating more red meat and other iron-rich foods.)

  • I had this issue as well, but didn't want to take the iron supplements.  I ate a ton of iron rich foods and my levels were normal within a  few weeks.
  • This is very common with multiple pregnancies.  I went on iron supps at about 16 weeks when I started getting lightheaded in the mornings.  I started taking Slow Fe and making sure to eat more iron rich foods.  Definitely also take a stool softener with the extra iron though.
  • Thanks!  What stool softner did you take?  I am going to ask my doctor about the vitamins with stool softners in them.   SHe told me to take one iron supplement and two prenatal vitamins a day.  I had just been taking one prenatal up until now.
  • I used Colace - or you can buy the generic/store brand. My pre-natal's did not have a softener in them.
