Babies on the Brain

is it mean of me

to let my dog chase the geese? They always get away beacuse they can fly, she just loves to run full sprint after them. It's hilarious, and it's good exercise for her, which she needs because she lives in an apartment with no yard

Re: is it mean of me

  • My only concern would be that your dog would get used to the idea that chasing things is ok and might at some point chase something that could not fly.  But if your pup is well behaved I guess I don't see too much harm in it.  Do you know what she would do if she ever chased and then caught something?

Nah, it's good for everybody - exercises the dog and keeps the geese on their toes.

Seriously though, geese are a real nuisance in a lot of places, and it's probably good that she's trying to chase them off.

  • Nah, there's nothing Rufus loves to do more than run in to a giant flock of birds and scatter them. ?He never tries to catch them, he just likes to watch them scatter lol!

  • My dog LOVES to chase the squirrels along the back fence. One day a squirrel fell off and I was scared because I thought he would go after it (he's caught birds out of the air and a mole before...) and he didn't! He stopped and kind of backed off like he was scared of it! lol He waited until the squirrel got back up on the fence and took off after him again. Silly dog.
  • well one time she caught up to a baby one (i know... i was so upset) but she didn't hurt it. She just scooped it up in her mouth very gently and starte dto bring it to me. When i screamed and told her to put it down she dropped it and came over and she knew she was in trouble. The baby goose got up and ran off.
  • Could you really even stop her if you wanted to? I mean my dog chases pretty much everything (squirrels, geese, birds, cats...you name it) that comes through our yard. She sometimes catches things and (this is gross, I know) eats them. No matter how much yelling or punishing we've done it doesn't work so we've just decided it's evolution and survival of the fittest. Plus anything my dog can catch is pretty damn slow anyways.
  • Should be okay although technically some are endangered species and could mean legal trouble. Also if a baby gets separated from its parent for too long they may reject it. My sister and I rescued a goose that this happened to.
