Ride on toys: When did your dc learn to "steer" & "peddle"?

Preston has a bunch of ride on toys. Some that he has to steer and peddle. He still does not grasp the concept of steering. He will be going along, run into something, get up and turn his toy around and then get back on and go on his way. He gets frustrated at time, but I have shown him over and over, but he just doesn't get it. Of course, it's hard with a strong willed child that wants to do "everything" himself. He can peddle, but doesn't seem to want to either. Just wondering what the approx. age is that other dc's are doing these things.

He has never been a "hard" player or rough and tumble, and always plays "soft". Maybe that has something to do with it. I don't know.

  • Nora's first toy that needed to be steered and peddled was her tricycle she received for her 2nd birthday.  She had it figured out in a couple of days.
  • DS can steer, but he can't peddle. Of course, he is really short so he has a hard time reaching them.

  • Ds got a ride on jeep for christmas although we didn't use it until March or so. He figured out how to steer in a day or so. He was around 22 months.

He also tried a pedal tricycle for the first time this past weekend and knew how to pedal with no one showing him how.

  • DD got a trike last year for her 2nd bday and it wasn't until the end of that summer (like, october) that she could reach the pedals and ride it much.  She could go part way around the block but we did a lot of the steering.

This year, we busted it out & she is perfect on it.  If she'd been able to go out & ride it over winter she likely would have perfected it all around January, so, 2.5ish yrs old.  Her legs are too long for it, she's *this* close to needing a real bike.  GAH!!!!
