Our DS (born at 26w2d) never has a BM on his own. Well, maybe twice in his life. The NICU docs thought he had a mal-rotation or Hirschsrung's Disease but the tests all came back normal. So, they sent us home reliant on glycerin chips.
He has a f/u appt w/ the GI doctor but it's not until June. I may have to call and explain whey I think it needs to be sooner. (He's considered a new patient even though the GI dr was consulted in the NICU.)
He's on 24-cal fortified breastmilk. His BM isn't hard (not consipated, per say) but he'll strain and strain and strain for days - seems extremely uncomfortable - and still won't go. Like he doesn't know how.
We were feeling great the first day we got home from the NICU he went all on his own! yay! But then the same cycle was happening again where he'd get so uncomfortable afte 5 days we decide to help him.
We've tried everything too like bicycling his legs, wrapping him in a warm blanket, massaging his belly (which he just hates), giving him plenty of tummy time. etc. Nothing helps.
3 days ago we gave him a glycerin suppository and he went...but then today he went again and I saw the suppository in his BM. It was whole - not dissolved, after 3 whole days. Any idea why this would be??
His BM is dark green (like moss green) maybe from the iron (polyvisol).
He has awful reflux and I've recently found eliminating dairy from my diet helps significantly. I was hoping then it would help him BM too. He was on Neosure, but now we've switched to Nutramigen.
I'm also wondering about Soy, but the doctors don't think that's probably an issue because he doesn't show signs of allergy like vomiting etc. (But they also didn't think he had a dairy issue...which could just be due to his immature digestive system?)
Re: anyone else? BM problem
We haven't been through this exactly, but one of our guys is pretty prone to constipation. Even at 18 months he still needs help pooping on a pretty regular basis.
This isn't a permanant solution, cuz he really needs the extra iron, but you may want to try stopping the poly-vi-sol for a few days, to see if he can poop on his own if he's not taking it. That nasty poly vi sol does a number on babies tummies
Robbie was the same way for a long time. Soft stools but infrequent.
It really didn;t get better until he started eating solids- specifically oat cereal.
Now he poops twice a day. It will probably get better as he gets older and get stronger tummy muscles, but he might struggle off and on, too.
My Blog
I also recommend the prune juice. My DD needed it up until she was a year old. It does get better as they get older. That muscle gets stronger and they become more regular.
