Preemies

Preemies and sleeping/eating schedules?

What did you do get your preemie to sleep more than two hours at night? I am trying to help Alison get on better sleep schedule at night. Right now we are feeding her every three hours, but I am sure she can go four at night.

last night she slept from 3:30am-7:30am and probably would have slept longer if I hadn't woke her up to eat. That was a nice stretch, but she fussed from 1:30am-3:30 when she finally went to sleep.

Am I expecting too much from her at this point?

Re: Preemies and sleeping/eating schedules?

  • DS was on a 3 hour schedule in the NICU, so we tried to keep a 3-4 hour schedule when we brought him home.  We were also told that he shouldn't go longer than 4 hours without eating, so even if he wanted to sleep, we would wake him.  But for the most part, let her call the shots.

If DS ever got off schedule, sometimes I would give him his paci to suck on for 30 min. or so, until it was time for his normal feeding.  But whenever he had a growth spurt, he would eat every 2 hours, so it won't all be perfect.

If you think about it, she's basically just barely a full-term baby. I know that it's hard to not sleep, but it takes a little while. She's tiny and going 3-4 hours is definitely normal :)
