Parenting after a Loss

When did your LO start reaching for toys/objects?

Every book I have gives a different time for this milestone. ?DS will bat at objects on his playmat, but I can't tell if it's intentional or just him waving his arms around. ?He doesn't reach for/try to grab anything when I hold it in front of him. ?Does this not happen until later, or should I be worried?

Re: When did your LO start reaching for toys/objects?

  • Linc started doing this at 6 months, but I know that that was a delayed age to start reaching.  Sorry I could not be any more help.  I think 3-4 months is a normal time to start doing this.  Give it a little bit more time, and then ask your pedi at the 4 or 6 month check-up.

  • DS just started doing this intentionally.  I especially see it when the dog comes by and he reaches out to pet him.
  • I would say 4.5 months when she was truly reaching. She was 7 weeks premature however.
  • Ditto the others. At 4.5 months mine are JUST now starting to make what looks like an intentional reach for something (and even then it usually has to be right there).

At 3  months, it was definitely just accidental movements. I think your LO sounds right on target.

  • Hmmm. I swear DD was doing this today.. But MAYBE she was just waving her arms around.. She will not try to grab things or anything..  but it seems like she'll try to hit the things on her playmat or her mobile sometimes.
