Parenting after a Loss

Anyone read to their baby that is less than 6 months?

I've read to Abby since she was born.  I do it so she can hear my voice and I try to be lively and animated and pick books with colorful pictures. i'll admit she didnt seem to care about ti till recently, but the past couple weeks she sits there and looks at the pictures and seems so happy and even "talks" to me too.

I recently heard someone say it didnt matter if you read to them until their 6 months.  I thought that was stupid. I mean, I know she isnt going to learn how to read from this, but it's far from stupid.  Besides, what else are you suppsed to do with a 2 month old?

Anyone else read to their babies?

  • I read to DD pretty much from birth, in part it was good bonding time, but also it got me into the habit of reading to her every day. Now, we read to her whenever she asks for a story and we read to her at bedtime. If you pick books with bright colors and big pictures, they'll catch her eye and when she's older the story will catch her ears :-)

  • We do!  I really enjoy it, and Eve is also really starting to look at the pictures..  Plus.. I think it DOES help them develop language. the more words they hear, the better, right?

  • Yes I have read to them since they were in my belly.
  • we do.  We don't have a set schedule or anything but we'll sit down and "read" books.

She likes the textured books by Scholastic a lot

  • we read to Harris before he was born...and continue to.

  • Fletcher loves books! He coos back at them and loves staring at the colors!
  • Yep...and he loves it. :) He likes to touch them and look at all the colors. :)
  • i don't usually read books to her at this stage (although she sits next to DD1 when we read) but I do talk to her and sing all the time.  Its just about hearing your voice so whether its books, or your stories and just your chatter doesn't matter.

  • Oh yes! We've read to Ethan since before he was born. ?Just within the past few weeks has he really started to get into books - he has clear favorites, touches and kisses the pictures, etc. ?For awhile it was tough bc he was so squirmy he wouldn't stay put. but we kept trying.

Keep at it! ?Just hearing your voice is so helpful to them.

  • We read to him all the time and he loves it. Our pedi encourages us to read to him and asks us at every appointment if we're reading to him.

We read but the baby is more interested in chewing on the book most of the time. Her biggest interest as far as pictures go are other babies' faces.
  • I started to in the beginning but ds didn't have the patience to sit there.   He's not a cuddly baby and needs to be on the move.  I just recently started doing this again this week and he seems to be more interested in it, looking at the pictures.  I needed to add something into his activity time.  The bouncy and play mat get boring!
  • Yup, DH and I have been reading to DD since before she was born. ?She really likes books with bright colors and likes when we use funny voices.
  • It may sound crazy, but sometimes I would even read to DD while I was still pg w/her.  It was sort of relaxing for me.  Once she was born it gave me something different to do when I got bored w/other things.
  • We try to read to her everyday but sometimes we don't get around to it. I'm a teacher so I firmly believe in reading to young children as much as possible.
  • Every day, since birth. ?It's great for them to snuggle with you and hear your voice. ?It's part of our bedtime routine. ?

  • We started reading to Emma when she was in my belly and read to her daily.  There is research that shows the amount of words a child is exposed to before kindergarten plays a role in his/her reading skills.  Children who come from homes with little exposure to language will not catch up to their peers till 8th grade....so read away!!!!
  • I read to Max all the time!  Sometimes, I read to him out of my People magazine  and sometimes I read out of his actual books.  I was at the pedi today for his 2 month visit and she recommended lots of reading.

  • I started reading to Robbie shortly after he came home from the hospital. It's part of our bedtime routine.. if nothing else, it's a signal that it's time to go night-night.
