The college graduation post made me think.

None of DH's cousins/aunts/uncles even went to college. Almost all of my family has graduated except for my little brother. Both of my parents and most of my aunts and uncles went.

There is not a huge difference in income on either side. On DH's side, most of them own their own businesses. On my side, they all work for someone.

How sad is it that my little brother who didn't graduate makes more than his brothers and sisters that did? I guess a lot of it depends on where you live.

  • College dregree doesn't always equal $$. It def helps get your foot in the door for traditional office jobs. I think if someone is motivated, you'll succeed w/out a degree, but typically in fields that don't require higher education. My dad didn't get his BA until he was in his 50's - we graduated w/in 2 weeks of each other. My parents have done really well w/out having degrees, but they've also been very good w/ money and saved a ton. My mom has a huge chip on her shoulder about college grads. Anyway.

I know a guy who runs a successful DJ biz-no degree. I know some people who spent 5 yrs gettin their BA, and now they work hourly jobs and have no drive/desire to get a higher paying job. All a degree proves is that you can stick w/ something even if it sucks in order to get the end result.

That was totally rambling. I need coffee.

  • I agree with you..on my dad's side, he has 2 siblings who graduated and 2 who didn't. The ones who didn't make more money than the ones who did. Same thing on my mom's side. She has 1 sibling who graduated, but 2 who didn't who make more money and are more successful

Alot of it definitely has to do with motivation.

But if you want to be a doctor, lawyer, etc you need that degree.

Then again, many degrees these days just don't mean anything anymore. You might still get passed over for someone who has more experience.

It also scares me that the govt is now trying to take over student loans. that is going to be a huge mess, and personally I don't want my kids endebted to the govt. Yikes.
