How to encourage naps at daycare?

My son is 3-mos old and started daycare last week.  He didn't have a set schedule previously, but he would go to sleep every 1.5-2 hours and sleep for 30 min - 1.5 hours.  In the stroller or swing, he's sometimes sleep for two.

He gets up at 6:30 every morning but then doesn't nap at daycare until 9:30 or 9:55.  I never keep him awake for 3 hours.  He's gotten 2 naps once or twice, but is mostly napping once.  Even if he takes really long naps in the afternoon, it seems impossible to get the 14-15 hours recommended.  He only sleeps 8-9 hours at night and so he really needs his daytime sleep.

My question is this - how do I get his DCP to try a little harder to get him to sleep.  I don't want to be the fussy/demanding mom, as we just started and I want to give him a little time to settle in.  Did anyone have a similar experience?  Did their baby eventually start sleeping better?  Any advice on diplomatically asking a DCP to do a little more to encourage sleep?

  • I'm having the same problem, but I have no advice. Sorry.

  • I'm also having this problem and to go along with it, they don't swaddle and my DS only slept well when swaddled.  This has been a process and the first week he slept for 10-30mintues at a time at DCS and now he's starting to sleep longer, so hopefully things will improve.  If I were you though I would certainly address your concerns.  Keep in mind, you're essentially paying their paychecks so they should listen to your concerns.  Good luck! Wink
  • What time do you leave for daycare? If at all possible, can you put him down again after he eats. DD gets up at 5:45 to eat and then she goes back down until 7:30 when DH takes her to daycare. At daycare, I've asked them to try putting her down shortly after she eats - she seems to nap best and longest then. She's usually up for a long stretch between 3 and 7 though so crabby by the time she goes to bed.
  • DS is one of those kids who doesn't want to miss anything so he doesn't nap well at daycare. They try to get him down when he's sleepy but some days he just fights it. If this is his 1st week it could be that LO is adjusting to being in such a busy place. I know my dcp said by next week he should be napping better (this is his 1st full week).
