Parenting after a Loss

When does it stop taking hours to nurse?

She wants to suck for hours on end and screams if I stop her w/o givig her a bottle. I don't know how much longer I can do this.

Re: When does it stop taking hours to nurse?

  • I don't remember it taking hours but DS was latched quite a bit in that first month since we didn't try a pacifier or bottle then. She could just be sucking for comfort. Since you have already given a bottle, if she doesn't seem to have any nipple confusion, have you thought about trying a pacifier to see if that helps at all?
  • It doesn't. Shes hungry. That's why the bottle works. She takes the bottle and then she's done.

  • that happend to me too and i that's when i went to LC to confirm i had supply issues:( and that's when i started EPing instead of BFing because it made my life 100% easier.
  • Harris would take about 30 minutes in the beginning, taking about 15 min on each side. Now, starting about 6-7 weeks I'd say, he is doing it in half that time. We can be finished eating in 15-20 minutes now.

Is it possible she just needs to suck a lot? Are/have you introduced a paci? I'd say if she is able to get enough milk and is full, you could take her off and give her the paci... maybe?

  • I think I remember it letting up a little bit around 6 weeks. At that point, she would just clusterfeed at night - constant nursing from 6pm to 11pm. Then oneday, she stopped that too - probably around 9-10 weeks. GL! It does get better!

  • Have you tried pumping to check your supply or talked to a LC?   KJ was pretty efficient at nursing but would spend 30 min on and about 45 min off when he was in growth spurt.
