Preemies

Micro-Preemie/Preemie sizing question

Hey Ladies,

I have a couple showers coming up, and attendees keep asking me what sizes they should look for. I am at a loss as to what to tell them because right now he is still soo small (1lb 14 oz).

What size was your LO when they finally were able to come home/wear clothes? I know all kids are different, but should we still look for NB and 0-3 or some preemie stuff too?

Also- do you see that your LO is staying "true to size" (3 mos clothes at 3 mos adjusted?) or are they under/over?

Re: Micro-Preemie/Preemie sizing question

  • My DS was born three weeks ago (almost 36 weeks gestation - he came home after a one-week NICU stay) weighing 6 lbs 8 ounces and he is just now back up to his birth weight. ?He is still wearing primarily preemie sizes (with a few newborn-size onesies too). ? That said, I'd ask for some preemie sizes, but ask for more newborn, 0-3, 3-6 sizes because these tykes sure don't stay so tiny for long! ?
  • My little one started out at 1 lb 11 oz.  They let her start wearing clothes when she was about 3 lbs.  We used micro-preemie clothes for a while in the NICU, then eventually went to regular preemie clothes (which swallowed her whole for a while).  She has always been behind a bit in the clothes sizes, but she has just abuot caught up.  She is now almost 18 months old (actual), and is starting to wear 18 mo. clothes because some of her 12 mos. are getting to be too tight.  The 18 mos. clothes are a little big on her, but she can pull them off if I roll down the waist on the pants.  They look big, but they are better than some of the 12 mos.  It really depends on the brands though.  For instance, I find she outgrows the Old Navy clothes she has gotten much faster than any other brand.

We found lots of online micro-preemie clothing sites that had great outfits!  I gave my list of links to these sites to Kelly Michelle and it is on her web page for Preemie parents that is linked in her siggy.   If you can't find one of her posts, page her and I'm sure she'll respond relatively quickly.

  • DS wore preemie clothes the first 1-2 months he was home. He was a size behind (0-3 months at 3 months, etc) until he was 6 months and then he was true to size. He's now 10 months and wearing 6-12 months or 9 month size clothes. I know lots of preemies the same age are still a size behind, though, so its hard to predict. Hopefully people will get you things he can wear any season (short sleeve onesies, can layer under something else if needed, footed pjs, cotton pants, socks, etc).
  • DS wore his preemie clothes for about a month after he had came home.  He is about a size behind still.  He will be 11 months this month and he is in 6 to 9 month clothes!
  • I had a big NICU miracle (he was a "breather") so I cannot give personal experiences on your sizing dilemmas but I did want to say that is it really hard to predict sizes for any baby.  My niece, who was full term and 7+ lbs is failure to thrive and wears the same size as my DS who is 6 months younger.  It is just hard to know how they will grow.  I agree with SBMBride above in that it would be nice to get a variety of sizes that you can put on him in any season.  He will be in footed sleepers for a while (DS still wears them as jammies at night).  Onsies are always great as well.  Hopefully that is what will happen.  I do think I'd want some preemie and micro preemie clothes if I were you though along with the newborn and 0-3 month stuff.   Have fun at your showers!  I hope you get some great stuff!
  • Baby clothes sizing is worse than women's clothes, as far as how things fit!

DS is 1 year old, and on the charts for actual age... the other day, he wore a 3-6 month t-shirt, 12 month pants and a 6-12 month jacket... it's crazy!

They'll all get bigger eventually... don't stock up on preemie stuff, or even NB... DS was 7 lbs when he came home; he never even wore preemie stuff, since when he was that tiny he was still too sick in the NICU to wear anything! We went straight to NB... and he was out of it in a flash!

  • I asked people to buy us 0-3 and 3-6 stuff.  When he was in the hospital I bought him NB size stuff to wear.  He didn't have that much but it was enough.  I also felt like it was something I wanted to do for him (since I felt like the nurses did most other stuff!).  When he came home he was in NB clothes and has stayed pretty true to his adjusted age for sizing.  He is now almost 8 months actual (5 months adjusted) and is in between 3-6 and 6-9 clothes.  HTH!  Have fun at your showers!

  • I'd ask for a variety. Robbie was 1lb 7oz as birth. He came home at 4 1/2lb and was in preemie clothes for a while. Then he was in newborn *FOREVER* because he stopped eating and growing. He's going to be a year old at the end of the month and he's just now almost big enough for 3-6 month stuff.

  • I wouldn't get too many preemie things.  I have quite a bit and my babies are coming home from the NICU sunday. I do not think we will be needing any of it.  They are 5 and 6 lbs.

You can always pick up a few more if you need it :)

  • DS was 5lbs. 7oz. when he came home.  We had about 7 preemie outfits/onesies, which were still a little big, but at least he wasn't swimming in them.  For us, the preemie sizes lasted beyond the weight limit on the tag.  I think DS was totally out of them around 7lbs.  Then we moved him to Carter's newborn size.  I think he wore NB until he was about 10lbs. then we moved to 0-3.  It really depends on the brand of clothing.  Carter's and Gap seem to run big.  The micropreemies that I know of seem to wear the NB and 0-3 much longer than other preemies.
