Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Flying with a 2 month old

We plan on flying from Vegas to Providence in September when our baby will be about 2 months.  I apologize in advance, this might be a stupid question.  If we choose to not purchase a seat for him, that means that we would hold him the whole time and we wouldn't carry the carseat with us, right?  Would you recommend doing this, or is it worth it to buy a third seat to give us a break?

  • right- you just hold the baby on your laps. i'm flying (alone, without DH) with Liam in a few weeks, and i'm not bringing his carseat. (we'll be using my cousin's carseat once we get home.) you could still bring his carseat along and check it at the gate, if you need to use it once you're there.

  • We flew with DD when she was 2.5 months old.  And just held her on our laps, it would have been a hassle to bring her carseat onto the plane IMO. We just gate checked her carseat and stroller.
  • We flew with DS when he was 2.5mo. They can be considered a lap-child until 2 years, so we plan to take full advantage of that! Bring your infant seat and stroller right to the gate and gate-check them. But yes, you'll hold him on your laps the entire time. At that age, they're not too heavy, so it should be fine. We even did it with DS at 8 months, when he was quite a bit heftier, and managed ok.

  • Ok, that's exactly what I figured.  I'd much rather not pay for the 3rd seat, and am glad to know that holding the baby for that long isn't too tiring.  Thanks!

You'll be used to holding a baby for that long by the time he's two months.

  • You can try using a sling, like Peanut Shell, too. It helps my LO sleep and frees up mu hands.
