2nd Trimester

Weight gain - or lack thereof - at 19 weeks.

Hi ladies -

I wanted to compare notes about my lack of weight gain to see if it's normal. I am a normal sized individual - not skinny, not overweight at about 5'8" and was just over 150 pounds before pregnancy. The thing is I am 19 weeks tomorrow and I really have not gained any weight - it fluctuates a little bit - some days I have gained a pound or two and some days I have lost a pound or two but overall I really have not gained more than 1 pound at the most. My exercise is pretty low key - a 25 minute walk around the neighborhood - and I am not trying to limit what I eat - I eat until I am full and have even been indulging in fatty foods (ice cream, cheeseburgers ...). Is anyone else in this situation? My ultrasound last week showed the baby was healthy and the appropriate size but I can't help feeling like my lack of weight gain at 4.5 months is a little abnormal.

Thanks!

  • If you excercise and eat right and your doctor hasn't said anything is wrong than count yourself lucky and be happy.

Lurk for a while here. People aren't crazy about the weight posts, especially those that discuss how you indulge in cheeseburgers and they don't go directly to your ass like it does for some of us.

  • Normal. If there was something to worry about, the doctor would tell you.

    Yes it's totally normal.

If you have any concerns you should address them with your doctor.

  • I'm in the same boat as you.  I go back for my next appointment Friday - and I'm pretty sure I'm only up two pounds.  At my ultrasound in April, the baby looked good, and the doc asked me about my eating.  I feel like I eat and snack all the time - mostly healthy w/ indulgences.  DH likes to make chocolate shakes a couple of times a week with me as the excuse.  So long as your doctor isn't concerned, I wouldn't be.  Just make sure you're getting your nutrition and some exercise.  I know the weights coming - everyone gains differently during pregnancy and at different times.
  • seriously, lurk a little.
  • At 19 weeks I was -8 pounds but I'm still having morning sickness without zofran I still can't eat anything and with it only about normal amounts of food.  The doctor told me not to worry some people just don't gain.  She is more worried about me gaining to much then to little.

While I can understand that other moms who have gained weight perhaps faster than they would like might cringe at my post, I certainly don't think I should be discouraged from posting what is a real concern for me because others may be unnecessarily ruffled by it. Of course, the intention is to reassure myself about my baby's health and development - not to brag that I haven't gained any weight. Just as a reminder: The point of this forum is to air concerns and get feedback - weight-related or not!

Glad to hear there is at least one other like me out there.

Okay, well if you want to play, I'll play. If you had been lurking you would have noticed there have been like 98 weight posts today and people get sick of them. No two pregnant women are the same. You said it yourself, your baby measured perfectly and was healthy. Don't you think your doctor would let you know if there was something to be concerned about. This is an OPEN forum, so feel free to "air your concerns" but also be prepared that a lot of people who have been here a lot longer might not necessarily enjoy what you have to say.

Seriously, at 13 posts you know everything there is to know about the etiquette  of a forum.

  • Oh ...a weight gain post!! We LOOOOOVE these.  LURK.  It's a nice option. :)
  • You can ask what you want. There is nothing wrong with your post.

With my first pregnancy I did not gain weight until the last 2 or 3 months, and my daughter was 8.6 so I think you are fine.  Don't worry.  Your Doctor and US say ok then why stress.  I have gained much differently with this pregnancy, gaining 2 to 3 pounds each month which is fine.  Everyone's bodies are different.  Sounds like all is well. You will eventually gain some weight.

this. you're not going to get much sympathy from people for NOT gaining weight. it may sound mean, but that's how it is.

  • I didnt start?gaining?until about 5 month appointment just make sure you are getting your calcium and protein in everyday along with fruits and veggies then I wouldnt worry. ?The baby growing does burn alot of calories and some of us dont retain a ton of water weight. ?

Wow! I am really disappointed in the holier-than-thou attitude of some of these posters. Here's a thought -- if you are not interested in my post -- don't reply. Just skip it!

Thanks to those who replied without the snide remarks!

  • If you don't want everyone's opinion don't post on a public message board.
  • Im 5'6" and weighed 170 pre pregnancy and have yet to gain weight either. I will be up one pound one week and down two the next. Im not worried and neither is my dr. I know I eat pretty healthy and try not to over indulge too much.

The other girls are right.  This is a sensitive topic.  Just recognize it and deal.

That being said, I was in the same boat.  At 22 weeks, I still hadn't gained.  The doctor ordered a growth U/S at 26 weeks.  The baby is measuring small, about 1 1/2 weeks behind and in the 20th growth percentile.  They told me not to exercise and eat more.  The evil doctor said that she isn't putting me on bedrest yet, but we will see.  She also mentioned IUGR, but the baby doesn't have that--yet, I guess.  I get another growth U/S at 30 weeks to check the baby's progress.

At my 28 week appointment, I was up 7 lbs.  The midwife told me that she thinks the baby is just on the smaller side and there's nothing to worry about yet.  I go in for my US in a few weeks, so we will see.

I'm clearly a rare case in this crowd, but even after not gaining much and having a "smaller" baby, I'm not worried.

You shouldn't be worried either.  Just keep eating and enjoy the lack of weight gain for now.  Everyone grows differently.  Some people hardly gain anything at first and gain it all in the 3rd tri.  Just keep an eye on it and talk to your doctor.
