2nd Trimester

NYC moms-to-be

Anyone know the standard rate for in-home infant care in the NYC/Brooklyn area? As of now, DH and I are about 90% sure we're moving back to Massachusetts after the babe is born (where I'd be able to be a SAHM for the first year), but we've recently become really sad about leaving Brooklyn. So I'm trying to figure out what expenses would be if I went back to work in January.

TIA

  • My best friend is a nanny around there and she gets paid like 550-600 a week..

  • $15-20 hour maybe? I was recently laid-off and thought about doing some babysitting and asked around and was told $15-20/hr.

A full-time nanny may be different... check out www.care.com and see what the ads are saying

You could also take a look at sittercity.com and see what the rates are.  My sister is graduating from school, and if she doesn't find a job in her field, she is considering doing nanny work.  If it is full-time live in, some families pay up to $80,000 per year, but if it is part-time live at home, it is more of an hourly-based rate... I would say the $15-$20 ballpark is right.

My husband and I are planning on moving back near our family in South Jersey when our baby is born so I can stay at home-- I totally know your dilemma weighing living here with living exactly the way you want.  It's definitely not easy figuring it all out!

And I would just add, with the economy the way it is, you can always put out an ad for the price you are hoping to get and see who answers you... you might be able to find great home care for a great price. You really never know.
