adding rice cereal to bottle ?

DD usually eats 5oz every 3 hours, but her doctor wants use to add rice cereal to thicken her bottle.

Should we only make a 4oz bottle now because we're adding the cereal or stick with the 5oz?

Re: adding rice cereal to bottle ?

  • I wouldn't chance it b/c it is a choking hazard. Just give her some cereal by spoon after the bottle if you need to give her some.

  • My boys took rice cereal in the bottle for the first time last night.  We moved up to medium flow nipples because it gummed up the slow flow.  But the boys took just as much as they normally do.  We did a 1/2 tsp per ounce of formula.
  • I would be cautious with this because it is a choking hazard

I agree.  I would try giving it to her by spoon.

  • hmmm never heard of it as a choking hazard (not sure why a dr. would recommend if it was dangerous) our pedi had us put rice cereal in ds #1 bottle b/c of reflux and it worked well we just gave him the same amount

I think the choking hazard thing is somewhat controversial just like everything else, but why risk it. If she needs the extra something, just feed it by spoon.

  • I know that my boys took it just fine and it was pediatrician recommended for us.  Our pediatrician told us that she didn't want us to try and spoon feed it until our boys were 4 months old.  So maybe that has something to do with why they want you to put it in the bottle for a 3 month old?  It is just a guess, but my boys took their bottle like I hadn't changed a thing.

  • we add to morning and night bottle and it does wonders.......2Tbs per 5oz bottle, so we did not change anything.  He vomits less, is less fussy, etc.  And, you may need to switch flow of nipple.  We typically use medium flow but use fast flow for the rice cereal bottles.  GL.
  • As for choking hazzard, we were worried, but he takes the bottle with no problems.  Just watch baby as you begin the process to make sure he/she is doing ok.  We have had zero problems.

  • thanks for all of the tips. I guess I don't understand how it's a choking hazard if it can fit thru the nipple

My GI specialist recc it as well. She wanted me to put 1 tsp an ounce. but it blocked it up. So I am adding now 1/2 tsp an ounce or so. However it is blocking the nipple and I went to a medium flow and it is too fast, any suggestions? Or what nipple/bottle do you use that works and how old is your LO?
